LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Kara McHugh scored the lone goal during the overtime sessions as No. 5 seed Marist overcame a remarkable comeback attempt by fourth seeded Siena to defeat the Saints 11-10 in double overtime in the MAAC Quarterfinals at Siena Turf Field. The Saints scored the final five goals of regulation including the game-tying goal with just 2.8 seconds remaining to send the game to overtime.
Marist (8-8) advances to the MAAC Semifinals for the 14th time in 16 years where the Red Foxes will face four-time defending conference champion and top seed Canisius Friday at 8 p.m. in Buffalo.
Siena finishes a much improved first season under new head coach Bryana Borrelli with a 10-8 record, doubling last year's win total while achieving the second most victories in the program's 19 seasons.
Marist scored the final four goals of the first half to claim a 7-4 lead at the break and ultimately netted six unanswered scores over 13:27 to open a commanding five-goal advantage at 9-4 with 23:45 to play.
But Siena would not quit.
Slowly the Saints chipped away and their double teams forced Marist, which was trying to stall, into uncharacteristic miscues which allowed Siena to rally one goal at a time.
Senior attack Alyssa Treanor played a key role in the comeback and finished with a team-high four points on a hat trick and added three groundballs in her final collegiate game. With 4:19 remaining, Treanor perfectly timed an interception of an attempted Marist clear and fired the ball into the unoccupied goal to pull the Saints within one.
However Siena still trailed by a goal with 12.3 seconds remaining and needed a miracle as Marist regained possession behind their own goal on the restart after backing up an errant shot.
Siena's prayers were answered.
Senior attacked Shannon O'Connor knocked the ball free from Marist's Sheridan Fauvell who was trying to run out the clock and found Treanor who one-timed a shot home in front as Siena miraculously forged the tie with just 2.8 seconds left in regulation and sent the raucous partisan crowd into bedlam.
But playing in just the program's third overtime game in the past nine seasons, the Saints couldn't carry over their momentum. McHugh's decisive goal came with 2:22 remaining in the first overtime and although Siena had its chances in the waning seconds, they were unable to net the equalizer.
Loudonville native Lexi Brannigan led Marist with four goals and Allison Gionta added a hat trick for the Red Foxes which had entered the MAAC Tournament having suffered four consecutive one-goal losses. McHugh finished with two goals and an assist while winning five draw controls.
Senior midfielder Erin Mossop added three points on two goals and an assist while winning a game-high six draw controls and causing two turnovers for Siena which fell to 1-6 all-time in the MAAC Tournament in making the program's fifth appearance in the past six seasons. Junior captain Lauren Smith scored twice and added four draw controls for Siena which has now played their MAAC rivals to a two-goal decision or closer in six of the last seven meetings.
Siena finishes its 2015 season having set program single-season records for goals (206), lowest goals against average (9.56) and road wins (six) and earned their first-ever home postseason game. The Saints graduate six influential seniors who laid the groundwork for a program on the rise, but return a solid corps hungry to take the next step in 2016.
