April 30, 2015 Siena Women's Lacrosse senior captain Julia Sirianni was named the MAAC Defensive Player of the Year at the conference's awards banquet in Buffalo Thursday night. The local product from Saratoga Springs, N.Y. was also named a First Team All-MAAC selection, while classmate Alyssa Treanor and junior captain Lauren Smith were named to the Second Team and freshman Emily Conway to the MAAC All-Rookie Team.
Sirianni is the Saints' first major conference award winner and First Team All-MAAC selection in three years, since Amanda Corso was tabbed the MAAC Co-Defensive Player of the Year and a First Team honoree following the 2012 season.
A Preseason All-MAAC selection after being awarded Second Team All-MAAC honors in each of the previous two seasons, Sirianni switched from playing midfield to defense at the start of the season and could not have made a more seamless transition. Named the conference's Defensive Player of the Week on Mar. 23, the Saints' tri-captain currently ranks 15th nationally in caused turnovers per game (1.87), 19th in draw controls per game (4.20) and 21st in groundballs per game (2.67). The program's all-time leader in draw controls with 227 in just three seasons dawning the Green and Gold, Sirianni started all 15 games in which she appeared prior to suffering a season-ending injury and won five or more draw controls eight times, posted a pair of five groundballs efforts and a five caused turnover game this spring.
Another local standout from Niskayuna, N.Y., Treanor started all 18 games during her senior season and ranked second on the Saints in both scoring (40) and groundballs (31) while adding 31 goals. Named the MAAC Offensive Player of the Week on Mar. 16, she tallied seven hat tricks including a pair of four-goal games this spring. Treanor graduates ranking sixth all-time in program history in assists (33) and eighth in scoring (110).
Named the MAAC Offensive Player of the Week for the first time in her career on Monday, Smith started all 18 games at midfield and led the Saints with nine hat tricks. The Menands, N.Y. star currently ranks tied for sixth in the MAAC in both goals (36) and free-position goals (12) and seventh in draw controls (48).
Conway started all 18 games during her freshman season on defense and finished with 12 groundballs and four caused turnovers. The local standout from Delmar, N.Y. played a key role for a Siena defense which posted a program single-season record 9.56 goals against average which was more than a three goals per game improvement from last season and more than a full goal per game better than the previous program best.
The Saints also boasted seven MAAC All-Academic Team selections, a list reserved for student athletes who have completed at least two college semesters at their current institution and possess a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or better. Siena's honorees included Sirianni, juniors Kate Callahan, Sarah Croutier, Andi Elwell and Smith and sophomores Cara McQuillan and Briana Sirianni.
The upstart Saints recently concluded their breakout season with a 10-8 record and finished fourth in the MAAC with a 5-3 league mark. The Saints' 10 wins were the second most in the program's 19 seasons while doubling last year's total as Siena earned its first-ever postseason home game.
