LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Both Siena Basketball teams continued their long standing tradition of giving back to the local community through Siena Athletics' BlueShield of Northeastern New York "Saints in the Community" program. Student athletes and coaches from both teams recently made their annual Adopt-A-School visits to local schools, while also welcoming the schoolchildren to women's basketball's Kid's Day Game.
The first part of the program took place on Jan. 11, when both teams visited five Capital Region-area schools. The Saints were joined by BSNENY which had its Healthy Zone Cruiser in attendance, and preached the importance of hard work, strong academics and making healthy choices while also interacting with students through games and basketball drills.
The Saints spoke to what it takes to not only be a Division I athlete, but how to succeed in any field you wish to pursue. Hard work, academic achievement, good sportsmanship and effective time management were amongst the topics discussed. At the conclusion of the visits, the Saints took time to sign autographs and present the students with some special Siena Saints memorabilia.
The program culminated with the Sixth Annual BlueShield of Northeastern New York "Kid's Day" Game which was held on Jan. 15 when the women's team hosted Monmouth for a special 11 a.m. tip at the Alumni Recreation Center.
The game drew over 1,000 local schoolchildren, their teachers and chaperons from Albany School of Humanities, Brighter Choice School for Girls and Philip J. Schuyler Achievement Academy from Albany, McNulty Academy Elementary School from Amsterdam, Karigon Elementary School from Clifton Park and Central Park Middle School from Schenectady which cheered on the Saints to victory. During the game BSNENY ran on-court promotions with the students geared towards making healthy choices and also had their Healthy Zone cruiser in attendance.
