Freshman Jake Holt carded his second straight round of 69 to lead Siena Men's Golf to a strong seventh place finish at Binghamton's Matthews Auto Collegiate Invitational at the Links at Hiawatha Landing in Apalachin, New York. The Saints recorded one of their best 36-hole performances in program history at the tournament, finishing with a Final Round score of 285 following an equally impressive round of 287 Sunday.
St. Bonaventure carded a Final Round score of 278 to tie with Drexel for the team championship with a two-round score of 565. The Bonnies captured the tiebreaker over the Dragons by virtue of having the better second round, fifth player score.
Delaware finished just a stroke back of the lead, while the Saints were just seven shots off the pace in the tightly contested 16-team tournament. Siena defeated its four MAAC foes in the event, finishing 17 strokes ahead of Niagara, 28 shots clear of Fairfield, 31 strokes in front of Canisius, and by a 33-shot margin over Monmouth.
Holt improved by seven places in the Final Round to finish tied for fourth overall at -6 and just three strokes behind the individual champion Owen Quinn of Lehigh. Junior Michael Christifulli (71) and senior Scott Kim (72) also posted strong Final Rounds to finish under-par for the tournament (-1) and tie each other for 21st overall.
The Saints return to the course Monday for the start of the Connecticut Cup in Ellington, Connecticut.
