LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. â€" Siena Field Hockey recorded a 2-1 victory over Sacred Heart in a shootout in its first game at Siena Turf Field this season. Freshman goalkeeper Mary Crumlish saved all three chances from the Pioneers as Fariyah Omarshah, Molly Hagen, and Jaycie St. John all converted to give the Saints a 3-0 win in the shootout.
This was just the second time in the program's 24 seasons in Division I that Siena (2-8, 1-1) has played in a shootout. The Saints won a shootout with UC Davis in 2009.
Senior Fabiana Citro netted her third goal of the season to open up the scoring in the 22nd minute. The Saints kept a 1-0 lead until the 44th minute when Rebecca Hauser scored for Sacred Heart (0-11, 0-1) to tie the game at one each.
The score would remain at one all for the next 56 minutes. Both teams had shots hit the post in near misses and each had a goal called back in the second half.
Siena also had to play one down during a ten minute yellow card. At one point, the Saints were two players down as two penalties intersected. Both teams also had opportunities on penalty corners in the overtime periods, but were unable to convert, sending the game into a best of five shootout.
Omarshah started the shootout with a goal. Hagen went next for Siena, following a block by Crumlish. Hagen also converted to put the Saints up 2-0. Crumlish then blocked the shot of Sacred Heart's leading scorer Hauser to maintain the two goal advantage.
The third and final goal was made by Jaycie St. John giving the Saints the 3-0 lead and a chance for Crumlish to clinch the win. The freshman goalkeeper did just that, stopping the attempt by Colleen McAninley to secure the MAAC victory for Siena. Crumlish had seven saves in the 100 minute game before stopping three in a row for the Saints.
The Saints will play two more home games next week. Siena will take on LIU Brooklyn at 3 p.m. on Friday, October 14 and Fairfield at 1 p.m. on Sunday, October 16.
