LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Siena Women's Basketball records 18 steals en route to a 71-63 victory over Colgate on Tuesday evening. Colgate tallied 26 turnovers which the Saints were able deliver to the basket for 23 points.
Jackie Benitez, who is averaging 24.7 points for Siena, added 23 buckets tonight. The sophomore guard went eight-for-ten from the free-throw line and recorded six steals. Freshman Anna Lundquist, who made her first collegiate start, added a team-high eight rebounds.
Colgate was led by Chelsey Koren who went 11-for-12 from the charity stripe and recorded 19 points. Rachel Thompson came off the bench and put up 17 points for the Raiders. Colgate's bench added 29 of the Raiders 63 points.
Right from tip-off the contest proved to be a battle of the in-state rivals. After just 10 minutes of action, four players had already been sent to the foul line. Colgate (1-4) started the game off with a three-pointer by Katie Curtis, but with 10 seconds left in the first quarter, Siena's freshman Anna Lundquist hit a trey to put Siena up 17-16.
The Raiders would go up by as much as six points in the second quarter. Senior Meghan Donohue kept the Saints alive with a layup to begin their run. Siena (1-2) scored four points off of turnovers and had five second chance points in the second quarter. The Saints outscored Colgate 13-12 in the second quarter for a 30-28 halftime lead.
The Green and Gold came out of the locker room with a fire and started the third quarter on a 6-0 run. Colgate did not make a shot until the 6:58 mark. The Raiders were able to tie the game 36-36, but Siena would never give up the lead in the third quarter and led 48-42 with just 10 minutes left.
Siena took their largest lead of the contest up 56-42. Colgate chipped away at the lead but was never able to get closer than five points. Kollyns Scarbrough hit a free-throw with 10 seconds left in the game to steal the game 71-63.
Freshman Maddie Sims came out with a team-high four blocks while also grabbing seven rebounds. Deja Rawls dished out a team-high five assists. Denisha Petty-Evans, who was celebrating her birthday, tallied eight points, three steals, one block and two rebounds for Siena. The Saints 18 steals are the most since Siena's last game of the 2015-16 regular season against Niagara where they recorded 19.
The Saints hit the road, but will not travel far. Siena travels to face UAlbany in the Albany Cup on Sunday, November 27 at 3 p.m.
