LOUDONVILLE, NY - In a tightly contested battle, Harvard slipped past Siena women's basketball 65-58 on Kid's Day sponsored by CDPHP. The Saints forced the Crimson to turn the ball over 26 times, their second most turnovers in a game this season.
Four Crimson scored in double-digits in the victory for Harvard. Katie Benzan and Madeline Raster both scored 13 points for the Crimson. Destiny Nunley added 12 points while Nani Redford came off the bench and recorded 11.
Sophomore guard Jackie Benitez recorded 19 points for the Saints, while senior forward Meghan Donohue added 17. Kollyns Scarbrough came off the bench and chipped in 13 points for the Saints.
Benitez started the scoring right in the first 15 seconds with two free throws. Harvard (9-1) took their first lead of the game, 8-6, with more than six minutes left in the first quarter. They went up by as much as five, 11-6, but by the end of the first quarter the Saints trailed by just three, 13-10.
Harvard added 10 points in the second quarter from off the bench. It would continue to be a close game between the non-conference foes. The Crimson led just 33-26 at the half.
Siena would outscore Harvard 16-15 in the third quarter. The Saints continued to fight hard and force Harvard to turn the ball over. In the final minutes of the third quarter, Siena went on a 7-0 run to cut the lead and trail just 48-42 as the fourth quarter would begin.
As the clock winded down, the Saints continued to cut the Crimson's lead. Harvard took a 10-point lead, 58-48 with just under five minutes left, but that would not be the end. Scarbrough drained a layup and the Saints trailed by just three, 61-58, with just 17 seconds left. Siena had some opportunities, but Harvard would make four free-throws to give them a 65-58 win over the Saints.
Denisha Petty-Evans recorded five steals for the Saints, while the team totaled 13 for the game. Forcing Harvard to turn the ball over 26 times, Siena scored 22 points from those turnovers.
The Saints will travel to Boston, Massachusetts to face Northeastern on Dec. 28. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.
