BOSTON, MA - In their non-conference finale, Siena fell 61-50 to Northeastern at the Cabot Center. Senior captain Meghan Donohue became the 27th member of Siena Women's Basketball 1,000 Point Club.
Northeastern was led by three starters, Claudia Ortiz who scored a team-high 13 points along with Jess Genco and Francesca Sally who added a respective 12 and 11 points.
Besides joining the 1,000 Point Club, Donohue recorded Siena's first double-double of the season with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Jackie Benitez added 14 points for the Saints.
Northeastern (4-8) got the ball at tip and went right to work. It was a slow start for Siena (2-9, 101 MAAC), however they ended the first quarter on a 6-0 run to trail just 17-10. Two free throws by Meghan Donohue to start the second quarter added to the Saints run and they would be down just 17-12. As the first half wound down, the Huskies went up by 13, 28-15, but Deja Rawls hit a deep three at the buzzer and the Saints entered the locker room down just 10, 28-18.
Siena went four-for-five to open the third quarter and trailed by just four, 30-26. After the Huskies went up by 13, 42-29, the Saints went on an 11-2 run and was down just 45-40. Northeastern hit their second three of the third quarter just before the buzzer and led 48-40 heading into the final 10 minutes.
The Huskies continued to keep Siena an arm's length away. Donohue completed a three-point play to put the Saints within five, 50-45 with just over five minutes left to play. The Saints were able to keep it close and never trailed by more than 11 points in the fourth quarter, but Northeastern was able to keep it far enough away to take the contest 61-50.
Siena welcomed the return of the unanimous 2014-15 MAAC Rookie of the Year, Margot Hetzke, who saw time on the court for the first time since Dec. 12, 2015. Hetzke played five minutes and grabbed one rebound for the Green and Gold. Karolina Severova came off the bench and chipped in seven points for the Saints.
Siena continues their road trip and heads down to re-open MAAC play against Manhattan on Friday, Dec. 30. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
