LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. â€" MAAC Preseason Player of the Year Joy Adams recorded her 77th career double-double with 20 points and 14 rebounds to go along with five steals to lead MAAC frontrunner Iona past Siena Women's Basketball 64-51 at the ARC. Junior captain Meghan Donohue paced the Saints with 13 points, six rebounds and four steals.
Red-shirt sophomore guard Denisha Petty-Evans contributed 11 points for Siena (12-13, 9-6) which has lost six of eight to dip back below .500. Sophomore guard Kollyns Scarbrough added 10 points off the bench for the Saints which saw their five-game winning streak at the ARC snapped.
Freshman reserve Alexis Lewis scored 17 points for red-hot Iona (17-9, 13-2) which has won seven straight to open a game and a half lead in the MAAC over second place Marist. Marina Lizarazu tallied 11 points and added five assists for the Gaels which have won seven of the past eight meetings against the Saints.
The second quarter was the difference in an otherwise tightly contested affair. Iona held Siena without a field goal for the entirety of the frame, and outscored the Saints 18-2 in the quarter to take a commanding 31-15 lead at the break.
The Gaels' swarming defense induced 10 turnovers in the quarter, while forcing the Saints to miss all 10 of their shots. Overall, Iona held Siena scoreless for 7:48 and without a field goal for 11:07.
But for as cold as Siena was offensively in the second quarter, they were equally hot in the third quarter. The Saints connected on 61.5% (8-13) of their shots in erupting for 23 points in the frame to halve the deficit to eight heading into the final quarter. Siena's equally aggressive defense played a vital role in the comeback bid as the Saints forced 22 Iona turnovers, leading to 19 points.
Siena would cut what was once as much as a 19-point second half hole to seven early in the fourth quarter, but Iona went on a 12-4 run midway through the stanza to pull away. Adams scored 14 of her points in the second half and keyed Iona's 38-27 rebounding advantage which led to a 17-5 margin for the Gaels in second chance points.
The Saints return to action Sunday for a Valentine's Day matinee against Manhattan at 2 p.m. in Riverdale, N.Y.
