The Siena women's lacrosse team opened their 20th season in impressive fashion as the Saints defeated Mercer 17-7. Freshman Lynnzee Miller had a huge debut for Siena scoring six goals to pace the Saints offense.
Siena outshot the Bears 34-17 and edged Mercer in ground balls 24-23. Freshman Samantha Horton made eight saves in her collegiate debut for the Saints.
Lauren Smith won seven draw controls and Sarah Croutier picked up six groundballs to lead the Saints in those statistical categories. In addition to her ground ball total, Croutier scored a hat trick.
In the scoring department, Briana Sirianni and Lauren Anglim each added two tallies for Siena. They also registered one assist each in the game as well.
Siena wasted little time jumping out to a lead as the Saints scored the first seven goals of the contest just 14 minutes in.
However the Bears would respond, scoring six of the next eight goals in the game to cut the deficit to three nearly five minutes into the second half.
The Saints went on a scoring run of their own in the second half, ending the game on a 6-0 run, three of which came at from the stick of Miller to put the game away for Siena.
The Saints continue their Georgia swing when they travel to Kennesaw to face Kennesaw State on Thursday at 12 p.m.
