UMass-Lowell used eight first half goals, which included a 7-0 run as the River Hawks recorded their first ever Division I victory Wednesday, defeating Siena by a final of 12-8. Michelle Schwartz had three points (one goal, two assists) to lead the Saints.
UMass-Lowell outshot Siena 25-24 while the Saints edged the River Hawks in groundballs, 23-20. Siena held the advantage in draw controls going 15-19.
Siena jumped on the scoreboard first in this one after just 1:56 into the game when Lauren Anglim found the back of the net for her fifth of the year and to give the Saints a 1-0 advantage early.
Following the goal by Siena, UMass Lowell would go on a 7-0 run sparked by a hat trick by Kristina Keith and two goals by Kelly Moran. The Saints ended the run when Sarah Croutier scored to make the game 7-2 with 7:24 to go in the opening stanza.
The River Hawks then traded goals with Siena in the final few minutes of the half to make the score 8-3 going into the intermission. Freshman Lynnzee Miller scored her team-leading tenth goal to cut the deficit to five.
The Saints scored the first goal of the second half when Lauren Smith tallied her first goal on a free position shot to cut into the lead of UMass-Lowell.
The River Hawks had the answer when with 20:29 remaining; Moran added another tally to give her a hat trick for the game.
Siena and UMass-Lowell traded each of the next four goals, both Saints' goals coming from the stick of Cara McQuillan.
With 3:04 left in regulation, Schwartz scored to cut the lead to just three.
But the River Hawks closed this one out when with just 1:14 remaining Jane Dudley scored her second goal of the season to put UMass-Lowell up by four.
Samantha Horton made five saves in goal for the Saints.
Siena (2-1) will look to rebound Saturday when the Saints host Colgate at 1 p.m. in their home opener.
