LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – Monmouth's late three-goal flurry spanning just 2:08 in the waning minutes proved to be the difference as the Hawks rallied past Siena Women's Lacrosse 16-15 in the conference opener for both teams at Siena Turf Field. Senior captain Lauren Smith (four points) and sophomore attack Lauren Anglim each netted hat tricks for the Saints which suffered their second straight one-goal loss.
Senior captain Sarah Croutier, junior attack Michelle Schwartz and sophomore midfielder Briana Sirianni each added three points on two goals and an assist apiece for Siena (5-5, 0-1) which has dropped three straight.
Croutier scored her milestone 100th career goal in the contest, becoming just the fifth player in the program's 20 seasons to reach the mark. She also won six draw controls and picked up four groundballs including the 100th of her career to cap a stellar Senior Day performance. The Saints honored their eight-member Class of 2016 immediately following the conclusion of the team's final regular season home weekend contest of the spring.
Olivia Higson (six points) and Marial Pierce (five points) scored four goals apiece to pace Monmouth (5-5, 1-0). Pierce also won eight draw controls for the Hawks which have now won all five meetings between the programs.
The teams combined for 44 shots in an exciting, high scoring first half which saw the Hawks on top 12-10 following the opening 30 minutes. However, Siena responded with the first three scores of the second half to cap a four-goal run to reclaim a 13-12 lead on junior captain Cara McQuillan's free-position tally with 20:31 remaining.
Siena maintained a slim one-goal advantage at 14-13 deep into the contest as the Saints' defense clamped down in the second half, holding Monmouth to just one goal over the first 22 and a half minutes after the Hawks had scored 12 times in the first half. Senior goalkeeper Ashley Holdridge had much to do with that success, making eight saves as opposed to allowing just six goals in 39-plus minutes of action in goal.
But the Saints couldn't hold on as Pierce knotted the score with 7:30 remaining and Caroline Corbliss scored the go-ahead goal in addition to an insurance tally to put Monmouth back in front for good.
Corbliss finished with a hat trick, while Michelle Gonzales added a pair of goals and assists for the Hawks. Caroline Huelster made 14 saves in goal.
The Saints will look to bounce back Saturday when they continue MAAC play at Manhattan at 1 p.m.
