ALBANY, N.Y. -- First Team All-MAAC selection Joy Adams recorded her third 20-point, 10-rebound performance of the year against Siena Women's Basketball to lead second seeded Iona past the seventh seeded Saints 64-47 in the MAAC Quarterfinals at the Times Union Center. Siena ends its 2015-16 season with a final record of 14-18.
"Obviously, today didn't go as we would have liked it to go," said head coach Ali Jaques. "I give our team a lot of credit for not quitting."
Iona (21-11) led throughout and by as many as 22 points in advancing to the MAAC Semifinals Sunday against the winner of Saturday's quarterfinals matchup between No. 3 seed Marist and sixth seeded Manhattan.
Freshman guard and MAAC All-Rookie Team selection Jackie Benitez led the Saints with nine points off the bench and fellow reserve sophomore guard Joella Gibson added a spark with eight points and five rebounds for Siena which fell to 1-10 all-time in the MAAC Tournament against No. 2 seeds.
Adams scored 20 points and added 14 rebounds for the Gaels which avenged last season's MAAC Quarterfinals loss to the Saints here in Albany. Adams averaged 20.3 points and 13.0 rebounds in Iona's three-game sweep of the Saints this season.
Iona led 33-22 at the break and opened the second half on a 16-5 run to claim a commanding 49-27 lead midway through the third quarter. The Saints made five of their final seven shots in ending the quarter on an 11-2 spurt to pull within 13.
But Siena couldn't get any closer as they shot just 3-15 in the final quarter. The Saints shot 32.7% for the game.
Siena's lone senior Symone Kelly scored seven points and added six rebounds in her final game donning the Green and Gold.
"The last two years I had here were great," said Kelly who battled through and overcame injuries her first two seasons. "I'm just glad I had the opportunity to be a Siena Saint for four years."
Aaliyah Robinson contributed 17 points, shooting 5-9 from three for Iona which has won 11 of 13 with its only defeats coming at the hands of MAAC Regular Season Champion Quinnipiac. Marina Lizarazu added 11 points for the Gaels which held a 44-33 edge in rebounding and a 14-4 margin in second chance points.
Following the game, three Saints were named to the MAAC All-Academic Team at the conference's postseason awards show at the Renaissance Hotel. Sophomores Emmanuella Edoka, Margot Hetzke and Kollyns Scarbrough were each tabbed MAAC All-Academic Team selections, an honor reserved for student athletes who have at least reached sophomore standing and who maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.20 or better.
