LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. -- Siena Women's Lacrosse erased an early six-goal deficit to forge its first tie of the game with 3:13 remaining, but Marist's Hayley Burke responded with the game-winning goal just 13 seconds later as the Red Foxes thwarted the Saints' comeback bid 13-12 at Siena Turf Field. Siena concludes its 2016 season with a final overall record of 7-10 including a 2-6 mark in the MAAC.
Sarah Croutier, Lynnzee Miller and Briana Sirianni each scored twice for the Saints which ended their season with a fourth one-goal loss in their final five games and sixth of the year. Croutier wrapped up her career finishing second in program history in both scoring (178) and goals (119).
Burke and Allison Gionta scored five points apiece to lead Marist (9-7, 6-2) which prevailed in another tightly contested matchup between the rivals. The last four meetings have now all been decided by a goal, with each program winning twice.
The Red Foxes raced out to a quick 8-2 lead less than 13 minutes into the game. But Siena answered with a 6-1 run to end the half and rally within 9-7 at the break.
Although they never led, the Saints hung around throughout and eventually drew even for the first time at 12-all on a free-position goal by Sirianni. But on the ensuing draw control, Marist's Kara McHugh raced down the field and found a cutting Burke for the decisive score with exactly three minutes to go.
Abigail Witczak made 12 saves for the Red Foxes which had entered the day having already clinched a MAAC Tournament berth, but were also able to secure a First Round bye with their win.
Sirianni added three draw controls and a pair of groundballs for Siena which held advantages in shots (30-24), groundballs (22-13) and draw controls (16-11). Meanwhile Miller won three draw controls and also caused a pair of turnovers to cap an impressive freshman year in which she tallied 37 points on the strength of 33 goals.
The future is bright for Siena Women's Lacrosse which has recorded 17 victories in head coach Bryana Borrelli's first two campaigns, marking the most wins in a two-year span in program history. The Saints are expected to return seven starters and five of their top-seven scorers from a team which set a program record averaging 12.1 goals per game this spring, and which tied last year's squad's single-season record of 206 goals scored.
