Both the Siena men and women stand in seventh place following the opening day of the MAAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships hosted by Rider University in Lawrenceville, N.J. Senior Christie MacFarlane scored all three of the women's points, while junior Nick Cornine (one) and sophomore Shaun VanBuskirk (two) accounted for the men's points in the program's first-ever outdoor championships appearance.

"I thought Day One started out really great with the 1500-meter trials advancing two men and one woman onto the finals, and to be able to score in both the steeplechase and 10K later in the day rounded out a good first half of the meet for us," said head coach John Kenworthy. "We're looking forward to capitalizing on some finals tomorrow and finishing with some competitive relays."

MacFarlane ran to a sixth place finish in the 3K steeplechase with a time of 11:39.46 to score the Saints' first points on the women's side. Siena earned its three men's points in the 10K, with VanBuskirk racing to a seventh place finish (31:56.85) to come in just ahead of Cornine in eighth (32:09.37).

In preliminary action, junior Paolo Fiore and sophomore Travis Fairlee qualified for the 1500-meter finals by each running within the next four fastest times following the automatic qualifiers. Fiore's time of 3:54.57 was good enough to qualify him for next weekend's Ic4A Championships.

Freshman Sarah Forman also qualified for the 1500-meter finals by running within the next four fastest times following the automatic qualifiers as she clocked in with a time of 4:39.30. Five of Siena's seven 1500-meter preliminary competitors on the women's side each ran personal best times.

The 2016 MAAC Men's and Women's Outdoor Track & Field Championships wrap up Sunday. Track events are slated to get underway at noon.
