ALBANY, NY - Behind a complete team effort, Siena Women's Basketball took down Howard 72-61 in the tail end of a doubleheader at the Times Union Center. Siena allowed just five points in the second quarter to give the Saints the victory.
Sabrina Piper and Maddie Sims came off the bench to knock down career-high 17 and 16 respective points for the Saints (2-3). Sims added seven rebounds, while Piper tallied three swipes to their stat lines. Senior guard Aaliyah Jones recorded 12 points as a career-high for the starter.
Howard (0-5) was led offensively by Sarah Edmond who recorded 22 points, the sophomore is averaging seven points a game. Tajzhane Dopson added 12 along with six rebounds for the Bison.
In just the first quarter alone, there would be four ties and six lead changes for the two non-conference foes. Howard led by as much as five in the frame, but a swipe and layup by Jones, who tallied seven points in the quarter, put the Saints on top 16-15 with just over a minute left to play. Just as Piper put the Saints up 18-15, Howard responded with a trey and tied it up 18-18 after one quarter down.
Howard went up 23-21 in the second quarter, but back-to-back baskets from behind the arc by Piper pushed Siena ahead 27-23. The Saints held the Bison scoreless from the 7:01 mark into the third quarter and went on a 12-0 that pushed ahead 33-23 at the half. Siena held Howard to just five points, the least points allowed in a quarter this season.
The Bison did not score until the 8:42 mark in the third frame when Siena led 35-26. Howard and the Saints would exchange baskets, but after a third trey from Piper and a layup by Emmanuella Edoka the Saints took their largest lead of 15, 49-34 with just over three minutes remaining in the quarter. Howard ended the frame on a 7-2 run as Siena led 51-41 with just 10 minutes to play.
Howard brought the score as close as six points, 51-45, but the Saints could not be caught. Maddie Sims knocked down seven of her 16 points in the fourth quarter to help Siena outscore the Bison 21-20 in the frame. The Saints held on to take their second win of the season 72-61 and continue a three-game regular season winning streak at the Times Union Center.
Along with the student-athlete's career-highs, the Saints 72 points tie the most points scored this season. Siena's 14 steals and 26 field goals made tie their season-high originally set at Penn State. The Saints shot 41.9% from the floor and 35.3% from behind the arc for a new season-best, while Siena's 40 boards ties their season-high.
The Saints begin a three-game stretch in six-days for the second time this season with a road trip to Hamilton, New York when Siena takes on Colgate on Wednesday, Nov. 29 at 7 p.m.
