Siena Women's Lacrosse dropped their season opener to the 2015 and 2016 Big South Conference Champions Winthrop 11-10 on Sunday afternoon. This was the first meeting between the two programs.
Nicole Beatson led all scorers with six goals for Winthrop (1-1). Two-time All-Conference players Katherine Judge recorded three goals, picked up three ground balls, caused four turnovers and had seven draw controls.
Lauren Anglim recorded a hat-trick for the Saints (0-1) behind her three goals. Michelle Schwartz led the Saints with five points as she dished out three assists and tallied two goals. Briana Sirianni picked up three ground balls and caused two turnovers.
The Saints (0-1) jumped out to an early 4-0 lead behind two goals from Sardella and one from both Schwarz and Alexis Deaken. The Eagles were not out of it as they were down 5-1 with 13:47 left in the first half. Winthrop rallied and tied the game 5-5 at the half.
The Eagles opened up the second half with a goal, but the Saints took the next four goals for a 9-6 lead. Siena led 10-8 with just under 5:30 to play. Winthrop tied the contest 10-10 with 1:54 left in the game and then Kristen Shriver added the game winning goal with 1:07 left to give the Eagles an 11-10 win over the Saints.
Sammy Horton recorded 12 saves for Siena.
The Saints will face Davidson in Davidson, North Carolina on Tuesday Feb. 21 at 6:30 p.m.
