ALBANY, N.Y. - With a 7-0 sweep of Niagara, Siena Women's Tennis has clinched the number two seed in the MAAC Tournament. This was their ninth sweep of an opponent this season.
Seniors Ali Garrity and Mitsuki Fukamachi continued to dominate during doubles play and boast an impressive 17-0 dual play record. The win also marked Fukamachi's 100th win while playing for the Green and Gold. Ivana Boberic and Natalie Weaver picked up the victory on court two in doubles and clinched the point. Julia Dunbar and Juliana Goehner came out strong against Niagara and won 6-4.
Fukamachi went out strong and fast and picked up her 101st victory of her career at singles three. She went 6-1, 6-1 to put the Saints up 2-0. Garrity played a strong first set 6-3 on singles one. She trailed 3-0 in the second set, but came back strong and clawed her way through to a 6-4 second set win. Boberic fell in the first set 6-4, and after a long back and forth three set match with Sansriti Ranjan of Niagara Boberic would come out victorious.
Rina Sakai won in a quick 6-0,6-0 at five singles to add onto the Saints sweep. Anessa Leyva fought hard at singles four and was able to take the win. Ann Phillips went up against Jasmin Vargas of Niagara on court six. Phillips had been cheering on her fellow Saints during the beginning of the match and now it came down to her to complete the sweep. She quickly took the point and completed the sweep for Siena.
The Saints clinched the number two spot in the MAAC Tournament which begins on Saturday, Apr. 29 at Mercer County Park in West Windsor Township, New Jersey.
