Saints Crush Cal Poly

Men’s Basketball Concludes 2018, Non-Conference Play on High Note

ALBANY, NY – Siena Basketball connected for 14 threes to match the program's most in 17 years, as the Saints closed out 2018 with a resounding 75-54 triumph over Cal Poly at the Times Union Center. Siena concludes the non-conference portion of its schedule with five victories, to mark the program's most in three years.

Evan Fisher scored a career-high 26 points for Siena (5-8), which shot 51% from the field including 14-29 (48%) from distance after having connected at just a 30.2% clip from three-point range over the preceding seven games. Seven different Saints made threes as Siena matched the program's most made triples since hitting 15 at Fordham on Nov. 25, 2001.

Mark Crowe (15 points) and Hank Hollingsworth (12) combined to score 27 points on 11-12 shooting for Cal Poly (3-9), which was making the program's first appearance in the Empire State in 59 years. Newburgh native Donovan Fields added 11 points and seven assists in his homecoming game for the Mustangs.

Siena went on a 10-0 run midway through the first half while holding Cal Poly scoreless for 7:26, as the Saints ultimately claimed their biggest halftime lead of the season at 36-25. Siena shot 59% in the opening stanza, including 54% (7-13) from three.

The Mustangs however bridged the first and second halves with 13 unanswered points to rally all the way back even one final time at 36-all with 15:05 to play. But the Saints responded with a 25-6 run – highlighted by both their second and third separate 10-0 runs of the contest – to cruise to the program's largest margin of victory since a 94-71 win over Manhattan on Feb. 16, 2017 here in Albany. Each of Siena's previous three wins this year had come by three points apiece.

Arguably the league's best big man over the past month, Fisher added eight rebounds to his stat line to now average 19.0 points and 7.2 rebounds while shooting 60% from the floor over his past six games. Jalen Pickett posted the second double-double of his phenomenal freshman season with 16 points and 11 assists (just one turnover), while classmate Sloan Seymour chipped in 12 points on 4-9 shooting from three for the Saints which allowed a season-low 54 points.

Marcellus Garrick added 11 points for Cal Poly which has dropped four straight.

Siena will ring in the New Year and tip-off the program's milestone 30th season of MAAC competition Thursday afternoon with a 4 p.m. tilt at Saint Peter's.
