RIVERDALE, NY - Manhattan's Kayla Grimme would give the Jaspers their first lead of the game with the opening basket in overtime but would fail to get the shot off at the end of the frame to help Siena Women's Basketball take their fourth overtime victory this season 56-54 against the Jaspers. Siena would hand Manhattan their second league loss at Draddy Gymnasium.
Senior guard Kollyns Scarbrough notched her seventh double-double of the season with 26 points and 10 rebounds, including 10 points from the free-throw line for Siena (14-12, 9-6). Maddie Sims added 11 points after hitting her one and only three of the contest.
Grimme tallied a career-high 20 rebounds along with 11 points for her ninth double-double of the season, 11 of her rebounds came off offensive boards. Amani Tatum knocked down 25 points after connecting on five from behind the arc for Manhattan (10-16, 7-8)
With a back-and-forth overtime quarter, Tatum put the Jaspers ahead 54-53 with just over a minute to play. Sims would hit the go-ahead layup 55-54. A huge Manhattan turnover and Joella Gibson free throw with six seconds to play gave the Saints a 56-54 lead. Manhattan had an opportunity under the basket with .8 on the clock, but while Grimme got the shot off and it went in, it would not leave her hands before the buzzer and give the Saints the victory 56-54.
Tatum hit her fifth trey of the game at the end of regulation to send the two teams to overtime, Manhattan's second overtime game in a row. To begin the third quarter, Siena took their largest lead of the game 39-29 but Manhattan would begin their comeback and following a 5-0 run would trail just 40-44.
While the Jaspers held the Saints scoreless until 6:52 in the third quarter, Siena knocked down eight straight points to remain in control 34-26. The Saints held Manhattan without a field goal for 8:07 in the frame and with their five points scored it would be tied for the least amount of points scored in a quarter by an opponent as Siena would lead 36-29.
Heading into the second frame, the Saints led by as much as eight points, but on a half-court buzzer beater by Tatum, Manhattan cut that lead to just two, 26-24. After holding Manhattan to no three-pointers in the first quarter, the Jaspers connected on three of seven to outscore the Saints 15-11 in the frame.
Siena started the game off with a trey from Sims, her sixth of the season, to take a quick 3-0 lead that the Saints would not give up for most of the game. Manhattan was able to tie the game up 6-6, but Siena held the Jaspers without a field goal in the final five minutes of the frame and led 15-9 after one quarter played, while the nine points allowed were the third fewest allowed all season.
Manhattan won the rebound game 49-31, but only recorded 10-second-chance points in their efforts. Siena used the Jaspers 20 turnovers to produce 18 points.
Siena concludes their 2017-18 regular season road trips on Saturday, February 17 when the Saints take on Fairfield at 5 p.m.
