The Siena Men's and Women's Tennis teams opened their season in Cincinnati, as they participated in the Greater Cincinnati Invitational hosted by Northern Kentucky. The Saints highlight of the day belonged to freshman Tomos del Olmo, as he earned a singles victory over Louisville's Clement Filho. The win would be Siena's first victory over an ACC opponent in men's program history.
Overall, the Saints have four individuals still alive in the tournament's bracket heading into play on Saturday. del Olmo sits as the only male left, while sophomores
Nanea Perkins,
Kylie Mullaney, and freshman Megan Brown move on in the tournament on the women's side of things.
Perkins won both of her matches on the afternoon, defeating Katja Dijanezevic from Northern Kentucky by a score of 6-4,0-6, 12-10. Able to move onto the semifinals, Perkins then won her second match 6-1, 6-2 to advance to the Draw #5 final tomorrow.
Despite a loss in her first match of the day to Jenna Vroman from Wofford, Mulaney would bounce back in the back draw and defeat Millie Khoury of Western Kentucky 1-6, 7-5, 10-6. Brown would do the same after a first match loss, defeating Lisa Freiss of Western Kentucky 1-6, 6-4, 10-5. Both Mulaney and Brown are in the finals of the back draw tomorrow.
Mullaney and Brown also grabbed a doubles win in the main draw, defeating Vrook and Bandy from Lipscomb by a final of 6-3 to move onto tomorrow's main draw semi final.
"What an excellent experience for the kids to play in a professional venue of this caliber," said head coach
Jeff Osborn. "The competition was at a very high level and match of the day came from freshman Tomos del Olmo beating a player from power house University of Louisville of the ACC."
The Saints return to the court tomorrow for Day Two of the Greater Cincinnati Invitational, as the individuals still alive will play in finals matches, while all men's and women's doubles will be in action.
