Sara Riso earned individual medalist honors for the second time in her storied career as a member of the Siena women's golf team Sunday, capping off a headstrong showing at the 2018 Hartford Hawks Invitational.
The senior turned in rounds of even, 70 and +1, 71 to finish +1, 141 in the 36-hole event, three strokes ahead of the individual runner-up. Her performance included consistent play in both rounds, hitting 17 greens in the first round of the 36-hole event and 14 in Sunday's action. Riso's victory marked the 30th time in program history that a Saints golfer has won an individual title.
"I was very pleased with how Sara played throughout the weekend," Head Coach
Dave Wronowski said. "She has been really good all fall and played flawless golf in this tournament."
The Hamburg, New York native contributed to the team turning in rounds of 310 & 309, totaling +59, 619 for a second-place finish out of the eight-team field, trailing only host squad Hartford (+42, 602). The finish marks Siena's best tournament finish since they also placed second at the Bucknell Invite Sept. 17-18, 2016.
"Overall, I was very happy with how we finished today," Wronowski added. "We have some areas that we need to work on heading into next week's tournament at Brown, but we showed improvement with each round we played."
Competing at the Hartford Hawks Invitational for the second consecutive season, Siena landed three members of their five-woman squad inside the top-20 individually. Aside from Riso, sophomore
Grace Cuttone (78+79=157) and senior
Ashley Nguyen (81+79=160) each secured a spot in the top half of the individual leaderboard, finishing tied for 12th and 17th, respectively for the weekend.
Sophomore
Abigail Chai-Onn (81+82=163) and freshman
Lena Kaufman (85+80=165) rounded out the team's representatives at the par-70, 6,623-yard surface at the Wintonberry Hills Golf Course in Bloomfield, Connecticut, placing in a tie for 22nd and 27th, each.
Following the strong performance, the Saints will now have two weeks off before concluding their fall season October 14-15. Siena will take part in the Brown Bear Invitational in Seekonk, Massachusetts, which featured a ninth-place team finish last season.
