LOUDONVILLE, NY – Siena College's Turf Field has been named Hickey Field in honor of Ambassador Douglas T. Hickey '77, H '16. The facility has served as the home to Siena's men's and women's lacrosse, men's soccer, and numerous intramural programs for the past dozen years.
"My family and I are pleased to support Siena and its athletic programs," said Hickey. "Having grown up in the Capital Region, I experienced first-hand the value of Siena Athletics in the community. Being able to provide them support to enhance their facilities is important to the teams' success, and that success is beneficial to the College. Most importantly, Siena's athletes are regularly among the best academic performers in the country, so it's heartening to support these achievers."
A 1977 graduate with his B.S. in economics, Hickey was presented the honorary degree Doctor of Humanities at Siena College's 76
th Commencement in 2016. He served on Siena College's Board of Trustees from 2001-10, and was awarded the prestigious Professor Joseph A. Buff Award for outstanding career achievement in 2007. A member of Siena's Ring of Honor, which recognizes the College's transformational donors, he became one of the principal donors to the College's Values and Visions Capital Campaign in 2000 by creating the Douglas T. Hickey Chair in Business, the College's first and only academic chair in its School of Business. His philanthropy to Siena includes making the lead gift to the Douglas T. Hickey Technology Center, home of the Will Raub '85 Trading Room.
Hickey was appointed by President Barack Obama to serve as the United State Commissioner General at Expo Milano 2015. As Commissioner General, he oversaw efforts to create a dynamic USA Pavilion that told America's food security story and activated a global conversation about the challenges of feeding the planet. Hickey previously served as President and CEO of San Francisco-based BinWise Inc., the leading provider of analytics to premier restaurant, hotel, and entertainment groups around the world, and for more than a decade as Managing Partner of Hummer Winblad Venture Partners, one of Silicon Valley's leading venture capital firms. He was also CEO of Critical Path, President and CEO of Global Center, and Executive Vice President of Frontier Communications Corporation. His work in the public sector has included serving as Northern California's Finance Co-Chair on John Kerry's 2004 Presidential campaign. He was also a member of the National Finance Committee for President Obama's campaigns in both 2008 and 2012, as well as Co-Chair of the California Finance Committee.
"We are extremely grateful to Ambassador Hickey and his family for being key contributors to Siena College and its athletic program," noted Siena College Vice President and Director of Athletics
John D'Argenio. "From the beginning, Ambassador Hickey has recognized the positive impact that successful athletic programs can have on the entire campus. His commitment to first class facilities and providing students with an exciting environment in which they can learn is not just in our newly renovated athletic facility, but across the entire campus."
Siena College first broke ground on the turf field complex in the Summer of 2006, and the men's lacrosse program christened the facility with a 15-2 victory over Merrimack on Mar. 10, 2007 in the first varsity sporting event played on the field. Both lacrosse programs have played their home games at the facility since 2007, with men's soccer calling the complex home since 2009. The 1,000-seat facility, which includes a press box, scoreboard, terrace area, and recently replaced field turf surface, previously served as the host for both the 2008 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Women's Soccer and Men's Lacrosse Championships.
A formal naming dedication of the field is being planned for the spring.
