Women’s Basketball Hosts MAAC Home Opener Against Iona (WATCH – 2 PM)

Saints Look for First 2-0 Start to MAAC Play Since 2015-16

LOUDONVILLE, NY – Coming off a commanding victory over the Saint Peter's Peacocks to open MAAC play on the road Friday night, the Siena Saints women's basketball team returns home to the ARC to face the Iona Gaels at 2 p.m. Sunday afternoon. The Saints enter their 30th year of competition in the MAAC in 2018-19.

Ten things to know for Sunday's game versus the Gaels:
  • The Saints' point total was their second-most on the season, (86 at Howard on Nov. 19, and marked the second time that the team had eclipsed the 80-point threshold. Siena had not done so multiple times in a season since 2016-17 (4x).
  • The squad was victorious in its conference opener for the third time in the last four seasons, extending its winning streak over the Peacocks to 17 straight dating back to 2010.
  • Four different Saints posted double-digit scoring totals in the win, with redshirt-senior Aaliyah Jones matching her season high of 15 points in her first start of the season. Junior Maddie Sims steadied the team with 11 boards, matching her career high and coming a point away from her third consecutive double-double.
  • Aside from Sims, Jones tied a career mark in field goals made (7), while junior Sabrina Piper matched collegiate bests in rebounds (7) and assists (7).
  • After holding a seven-point lead at the half, the Saints exploded for a 31-point effort in the third quarter, matching a program record for a period since the NCAA switched from halves to quarters prior to the 2015-16 campaign.  The team also posted 31 points in the fourth quarter of a conference win at Canisius on Feb. 8, 2017.
  • Siena's 24 assists in the win were the team's most since having 27 helps in a 79-44 win at Niagara on Jan. 26, 2006.
  • Additionally, the team's 50 rebounds were its most in a contest since accumulating 63 against Navy on Nov. 27, 2015. In out-rebounding Saint Peter's 50-25, Siena also posted its highest rebounding margin over an opponent (+25) since the Navy contest (+27).
  • Competing in its 12th game of the season, the team turned in season highs in field goals made (33), field goal percentage (47.8), offensive rebounds (20), total rebounds (50) and assists (24), while tying a season best in three-pointed made (9).
  • 33 field goals made was the most by the Saints in a contest since they made 34 in a win over rider on Jan. 29, 2007.
  • The Saints will now aim for their first 2-0 start to conference play since the 2015-16 season, when they won their first seven MAAC contests to begin league action.
