ALBANY, NY – In arguably the wildest college basketball game of the 2018-19 season, Quinnipiac prevailed over Siena Basketball 107-100 in an epic triple overtime thriller in front of a capacity crowd of 7,146 at the Times Union Center. Freshman phenom
Jalen Pickett achieved the second highest single-game point total in Siena history with 46 points, but Cameron Young scored a MAAC record and 2018-19 Division I high 55 points for the Bobcats.
Young shot 15-24 from the field, 9-13 from three, and 16-20 from the free throw line in accomplishing the third highest scoring Division I single-game performance this century. He added 10 rebounds to secure the double-double for Quinnipiac (14-11, 9-5) which pulled into a tie for first place in the MAAC Standings with Canisius with four games remaining.
Pickett's 46-point performance trails only Doremus Bennerman's 51-point effort vs. Kansas State on Mar. 30, 1994 in the NIT for the highest single-game scoring mark in the Siena's (13-14, 8-6) 80-year history. Pickett shot 14-26 from the floor, 4-8 from distance, and 14-17 from the charity stripe to secure just the sixth 40-plus point performance in program history.
Young and Pickett also now hold the two highest single-game scoring performances in the Times Union Center facility's history, surpassing the previous benchmark of 44 set by Niagara's Alvin Young on Feb. 8, 1999.
What turned out to be an historic afternoon appeared to be headed towards a one-sided outcome for much of the contest. Quinnipiac led for nearly 42 of the 55 minutes, and by as many as 20 points on three separate occasions in the second half. The Bobcats claimed their final 20-point advantage at 58-38 with just 12:55 remaining in regulation.
But that's when Pickett, who had scored just 14 points to that juncture, took over. He scored 32 of his points over the final 27:39, and capped a 33-12 deluge with a floater in the lane to put Siena ahead 71-70 with 1:37 remaining. The Saints shot 56% from the field during their second half comeback in which they scored a season-high 51 points in the stanza.
Rich Kelly put Quinnipiac back in front with a three on the next possession, and the Bobcats took a four-point lead following a pair of Tyrese Williams free throws with 28.8 seconds to go. But Pickett answered and
Manny Camper then stole the ensuing inbounds, while scoring the game-tying basket with 5.1 seconds left to send the game to overtime tied at 75.
Siena battled back once more in the first extra session after trailing by as many as four on multiple occasions, the final of which was an 86-82 Bobcat advantage with 56 seconds remaining. The duo of Camper and Pickett came through once again in the clutch, with Camper rallying the Saints within 86-84 with 44.4 seconds to go before Pickett sent the game to double overtime tied at 86 with a short pull-up with four-tenths of a second remaining.
In the second overtime it would be the Bobcats who found themselves on their heels, trailing by four midway through the period. But Young knotted the score at 93 on a triple with 23.5 seconds remaining, and Pickett misfired on a potential game-winning three at the other end as time expired.
Quinnipiac never trailed in the third overtime, and Kelly hit a back-breaking three to put the Bobcats up five at 102-97 with 46.5 seconds left. Siena would get no closer than four points the rest of the way as Quinnipiac secured its fourth straight win in the series.
Pickett tallied a double-double in dishing out a season-high tying 13 assists as opposed to just one turnover in 53:32 running the point for the Saints, which remarkably committed just a season-low four turnovers in the 55-minute affair. Pickett also grabbed four rebounds and four steals for Siena who, despite the loss, sits just one game back of the Bobcats and Canisius in the jumbled MAAC Standings. Just two games separate the top-eight teams in the 11-game conference heading into the final two weeks of the regular season.
Kelly finished with 24 points while Williams added 14 for Quinnipiac which shot 51% from the field including 15-30 (50%) from three. The trio of Young, Kelly, and Williams combined to score 93 points for the Bobcats which held a 50-31 rebounding advantage.
Camper scored a career-high 21 points for the Saints which reached the century mark in scoring for the first time since a 100-69 win over Saint Peter's on Mar. 1, 2003.
Kevin Degnan contributed 15 points and eight rebounds for Siena which harbored a 29-6 advantage in points off turnovers. Meanwhile,
Sloan Seymour notched nine points on a trio of threes for the Saints, tying the program's freshman record of 76 set by Scott Knapp in 1997-98.
The Saints will look to reset quickly as they prepare to continue their season long four-game homestand Tuesday night with a 7 p.m. tip vs. Saint Peter's.
