The Siena Saints men's lacrosse program opened their season on Saturday afternoon, hosting the Hobart Statesmen at the newly christened Hickey Field. The Statesmen would best the Saints, as the Green and Gold fell by a final score of 22-12.
Siena (0-1) would get a three-goal day from
Dylan Pantalone, leading the Green and Gold in that department. Seniors
Keenan Cook and
Mike Reilly each tossed in a pair of goals, while five other Saints notched tallies. Graduate student
Aaron Lewis made seven saves in between the pipes, all coming in the second half.
Hobart (2-0) was led by a nine goal performance from Jason Knox, while Tommy Mott, Ryan Archer, and Derrek Madonna each collected multi-score games as well. The Statesmen set a new NCAA record with 33 faceoffs won, going 33-for-38 in the contest.
The Saints jumped on the board first, as Preseason All-MAAC selection
Nick Pepe scored just over two minutes in to give Siena a 1-0 lead. However, that score led to seven goals in a row from Hobart, as they held a 7-1 lead after the first quarter. The second quarter saw 13 total goals from both sides combined, as Cook would score twice for Siena, but eight more Hobart goals gave them a 15-6 lead at the half.
The second half would be about even between both sides, as the Saints aimed to cut into the Hobart lead. The Statesmen would keep up their scoring, but would only outscore the Saints in the second half by a goal, 7-6.
Siena returns to action Saturday, Feb. 23 when they travel to Massachusetts to take on the UMass Lowell Riverhawks, with the opening face-off going off at 2 p.m.
