Reilly Nets OT Winner as Men’s Lacrosse Tops UMass Lowell

Saints Complete Comeback in Win Number One of Gleason Era

The Siena Saints men's lacrosse program collected their first win of the Liam Gleason era on Saturday afternoon, as the team came back from a 10-4 deficit to top the UMass Lowell Riverhawks by a final of 16-15. Senior Mike Reilly scored the game-winning goal with 11 second left in overtime to give Siena the win and complete the comeback.

The win would be the second straight year Siena would defeat the Riverhawks in overtime, and would be the most goals Siena would score in a game since an 18-goal performance in a victory at Quinnipiac on April 19, 2014.

Siena (1-1) was led by a trio of four-goal performances from Reilly, senior Keenan Cook and sophomore Nick Pepe. Brendan Lantieri scored twice, while Jack Kiernan and George Rusnak each tallied once. Reilly also added a team-high five ground balls, while Jason Zou grabbed four ground balls and won 10 faceoffs.

UMass Lowell was led by a four goal day from Brandon Beland, while Cory Highfield and Jake Lining each scored three. Liam McDonough led the Riverhawks with 10 ground balls, winning 20 face offs. Eric Flynn would add five ground balls.

Pepe, the Preseason All-MAAC selection, scored the first goal for the second straight game, and scored two of the first three goals. Pepe and senior Keenan Cook would put on a scoring race throughout the game. However, Pepe's first goal wouldn't come until UMass Lowell scored five unanswered to begin the game. After the first 10 minutes, the score would stand 7-1. Not much would change through the second, as the Saints still trailed by six goals, 10-4.

Brenden Lantieri and Pepe opened the scoring to open the second half, as Siena would tally up five goals in the third quarter while holding the Riverhawks to one. With the Green and Gold scoring spree, they only trailed 11-9 heading into the final 10 minutes.

UMass Lowell seemed to pull away, as they scored four goals to Siena's two over the first few minutes. With 8:52 remaining in regulation, Siena trailed 15-11. The Saints then decided to turn on the jets, as Cook would score twice to pull back within two with 6:31 to play. Freshman George Rusnak would then score with 5:45 to play to come within a goal.

With time ticking down, the Saints forced two huge turnovers and regained possession. The ball would go to Reilly, who scored with 24 seconds remaining in the fourth to tie things up at 15-15. Siena also had a chance with just moments remaining on the clock, as Lantieri rang a ball off the post, leading to overtime.

Reilly would once again convert in the final moments of overtime, making a run and scoring from close range to clinch the comeback win for the Saints.

Siena returns to action Tuesday, March 5 when they head east to Connecticut to take on the Fairfield Stags. The game will get underway at 3 p.m.
