Women’s Lacrosse Drops to Army in Home Opener

Big Lead Early For Black Knights Plagues Saints

With bitter cold northern New York weather in the air, the Siena Saints women's lacrosse program had their first home game of the 2019 season at Hickey Field Wednesday afternoon. The result wouldn't be as warm either, as the Saints would fall to the Army West Point Black Knights by a score of 12-8.

Siena (0-2) would get a three goal game from Nicole McNeely, as it would be her second straight three-goal game. Junior Annie Brennan and Kaitlyn Dowsett added a pair of goals as well, with freshman Mary Soures notching her first collegiate goal. Brennan and junior Megan Power each led the Saints with three ground balls. Senior Sammy Horton would make six saves in net for the Green and Gold.

Army (4-0) was led by a five-goal game from Jackie Bratton, while Samantha Stewart and Caroline Raymond each added two as well. Raymond and Lauren Bredenburg each led the Black Knights with four ground balls.

The Saints jumped on the board first as Brennan got Siena on the board in the first two minutes. But from there, Army scored five unanswered goals, and eight of the first 10 goals of the first half. Brennan scored her second goal of the game with 2:45 remaining in the first half, but the Black Knights held the 8-3 advantage going into the half.

As it seemed Army might run with the game as they scored first in the second half, Siena buckled down and held the Black Knights to just three goals the rest of the way, including going scoreless over the final 17-plus minutes. McNeely and Dowcett would be go-to scorers for the Saints, as they were able to close the gap slightly down the stretch. Dowcett would add her second goal of the game with 2:57 to play, but that would conclude the scoring for the day.

Both sides stayed just about even in ground balls, as Army held the slight advantage 22-21. However, Siena outshot the Black Knights 30-26.

Siena return to action Saturday, Feb. 23 when they Saints hit the road to take on Big East power Villanova. The game will kick off at 4 p.m.
