Down only 4-3 at the half, the Siena Saints women's lacrosse program saw Big East foe, the Villanova Wildcats, score five unanswered goals in the middle of the second half to pull away and take the 12-7 win Saturday afternoon.
Siena (0-3) would be led by a three-goal day from redshirt freshman
Kaitlyn Dowsett, scoring once on a free position.
Kerry Gerety,
Nicole McNeely,
Mary Soures, and
Hayley Kmack all scored, while Gerety led all Saints in ground balls with three. Goalie
Sammy Horton was strong early, making a total 13 saves in the game.
Villanova was led by a quad of Wildcats with a pair of goals, as Carlye Maita, Devin Hassinger, Grainger Rosati, and Devon Brown all scored twice. Four other Wildcats scored, as Maggie Jennings led the team with four ground balls.
The Saints would give up a pair of goals early, but would get on the board around the 18-minute mark when McNeely struck with a goal. Horton would keep the Saints in the game, as with just over a minute remaining in the first half the Green and Gold would tie up the game at 3-3. Soures' tally to tie the game wouldn't last long, as Villanova would score moments later to take a 4-3 lead into the half.
In the second half, it would be a scoring duel as both sides found the twine as the score stood 6-4 after a Dowsett goal at the 23:07 mark. But from there, the Wildcats would break open the game and score five unanswered goals to pull away.
Siena return to action Saturday, Feb. 27 when they take on Colgate in Hamilton, NY. The game will open at 5 p.m.
