Tommy Miller out-dueled Preseason Second Team All-American Mitchell Senger as Siena Baseball shutout NCAA Super Regional participant Stetson 5-0 in DeLand, Florida for a resounding first win of the 2019 season. Miller tossed six shutout innings for Siena which secured just the program's fifth win in 46 tries against the perennial regional power Hatters.
Miller scattered just four hits while walking four and striking out eight for Siena (1-3) in combining with freshmen relievers
Arlo Marynczak and
Mike McCully on the five-hit shutout. Miller moved up three spots on the program's all-time strikeouts list with his performance, and now stands fourth all-time with 191 punch outs.
The Saints chased Senger, who is also on the Golden Spikes Watch List, after just six batters. Siena worked five straight one-out walks against the Stetson (0-5) ace to force in the first two runs, while
Matt Hamel capped the four-run top of the first with a two-run single.
The Saints added an insurance run in the fourth as Siena notched a key victory against a Hatters squad which is the preseason favorite to repeat as ASUN Champs after finishing last season ranked seventh nationally in the final NCBWA Top-25 Poll.
Stetson worked eight walks and had its chances offensively, but the Hatters stranded 16 runners including at least one in every inning but one.
First pitch of the second game of the four-game wraparound weekend series is set for Sunday at 1 p.m. at Melching Field.
