The Siena Saints took on the Fairfield Stags for the third game of their season on Tuesday afternoon. It would be a 10-goal run by the Stags in the first half that downed the Green and Gold by a final score of 21-15.
The Saints were led by a five goal day from senior and captain
Mike Reilly, as he netted three of his goals in the second half. Senior
Keenan Cook and sophomore
Jack Kiernan also ended up with five-point days. Cook scored twice and dished three assists, while Kiernan scored a trio of goals on five shots and tossed out a pair of assists. Senior
Eric Munn scored twice in the first quarter, while
Brett Habich,
Brendan Johnson, and
Dylan Pantalone each scored as well. Graduate student goalie
Aaron Lewis made nine saves on the game.
Fairfield was led by a pair of five goal games from Dylan Beckwith and Travis Ford, with Beckwith putting up a nine point effort. In addition to his five goals, Beckwith added four assists, also leading the team in shots and shots on goal. Taylor Strough added three goals, while Liam Lynch added a team-high six ground balls.
The Stags got on the board first in the first three minutes of the game, scoring twice to take an early 2-0 lead. But, the Saints saw Munn step up and score on their first offensive possession, then again minutes later to tie the game at 2-2 with 7:46 to play in the first quarter. From there, Fairfield took over, scoring 10 unanswered goals into the second quarter, as they took a 12-2 lead with 3:38 to play in the first half. Reilly and
Dylan Pantalone would score around another Stag tally, as it stood 13-4 going into halftime.
Siena would score four times in the third quarter, opening up with goals from
Keenan Cook and
Jack Kiernan to cut the lead to seven. After the Saints and Stags traded goals once more, Fairfield picked up the scoring and outscored the Saints 5-4 in the quarter, taking an 18-8 lead going into the final quarter.
A goal by Dylan Beckwith just a minute into the fourth gave Fairfield their biggest lead of the day, an 11 goal lead with 14:01 to play. But the Saints did not go away, scoring six goals in a row to climb back into the game at 19-14 with 4:09 to play. Reilly and Kiernan each scored twice during the run, with Cook and
Brendan Johnson scoring as well to spur some late magic. But, a pair of goals by Fairfield 30 seconds apart with about two minutes to play put a halt to the late charge, as Fairfield held on for the win.
The Green and Gold were more efficient in their man up opportunities, scoring twice in three tries while the Stags converted two of six opportunities.
The Saints return to action on Saturday, March 9 when they return home to Hickey Field to take on St. John's at 1 p.m.
