Evan Lumbert and two relievers combined for a two-hit shutout as Florida Gulf Coast took the series opener from Siena Baseball 8-0 in Fort Myers.
Brian Kelly and
Alex Milone accounted for the Saints' two hits.
Lumbert allowed both hits over six shutout innings to earn the win for Florida Gulf Coast (6-2) which has won four straight while outscoring their opponents by a combined 37-2 margin. Lumbert walked three and struck out six.
Ben Seiler struck out four batters over five innings of work for Siena (2-5). The Saints had their best chance to score in the bottom of the second when they loaded the bases with two outs, but were unable to cash in.
The Eagles opened the scoring with two runs in the second, and added single runs in the third and sixth innings before breaking the game open with a four-run seventh. Eric Gonzalez and Keith Stevens each homered for FGCU, with Gonzalez leading the offense with three hits, three runs scored and a pair of RBI.
The teams continue the four-game series Friday night at 6:30 p.m.
