William Krull and Joseph Preziuso each went a perfect 4-4 as defending MAAC Champion Canisius outslugged Siena Baseball 14-12 in the conference opener in Buffalo. Siena tied a season-high in hits for the second straight game in pounding out 13, while also setting a new season benchmark for runs scored.
Krull and Preziuso combined to go an unblemished 8-8 from the plate with four runs scored and five RBI to pace an 18-hit Canisius (6-15, 1-0) attack. Five different Golden Griffin batters recorded multi-hit efforts, while each of the top five hitters in the order scored multiple runs.
Siena (4-13, 0-1) matched Canisius in having both five hitters record multiple hit performances and five scoring twice or more.
Matt Hamel led the way with three hits, and was one of four Saints to knock in a pair of runs.
The Golden Griffins batted around in the first inning, sending 10 men to the plate while scoring five times. Canisius ultimately built a 6-2 lead through four innings.
Siena responded with its biggest frame of the season, with a six-run outburst in the fifth. The Saints sent 11 batters to the dish, and received a two-run single from
Tim Carroll to knot the score. Carroll capped the scoring in the inning when he crossed the plate on a passed ball to stake Siena to an 8-6 lead.
Canisius responded with six runs of their own in the home half of the sixth to reclaim a 12-8 advantage in the seesaw barnburner. Jake Burlingame headlined the big inning with a two-run home run.
The resilient Saints rallied to tie the score one final time with a four-run seventh punctuated by a two-run single by
Brian Kelly. But Krull led off the bottom of the seventh with the go-ahead home run to put the Golden Griffins back in front for good.
Senior ace
Tommy Miller registered seven strikeouts over five innings, to tie Dave Pahucki '02 for the program record with 222 career strikeouts.
The series concludes with doubleheader action Sunday starting at noon.
