Baseball Bucks Rider To Begin Weekend #MAACBaseball Series

Senior Tommy Miller Became The Program’s All-Time Strikeout Leader In Siena’s 7-2 Win

Senior Tommy Miller went the distance and struck out six to become Siena Baseball's all-time strikeout leader Friday afternoon, as the Saints opened a three-game weekend conference series on a high note. The Saints took down Rider, 7-2, at Sonny Pittaro Field in Lawrenceville, NJ to break a six-game losing skid and pick up their first conference win of the 2019 season.

Taking the field for the second time in conference play this season, Siena (5-15, 1-3) fueled Miller's career day with a steady offensive output, pulling out to a 2-1 lead through three innings. Freshman Carson Dunkel got the team on the board in the top of the second, singling up the middle with the bases loaded to plate sophomore Tim Carroll. An inning later, it was junior Zach Durfee with the hot bat, lacing an RBI double to left field to allow senior Brian Kelly to score.

After the Broncs answered in the home half of the third with a run scoring on a fielder's choice, freshman Alex Milone responded in the top of the fifth with a solo shot down the right field line, his third home run of the season. Again, the home team responded to cut Siena's lead to 3-2 with a sacrifice fly in the hole half of the frame, but the Green and Gold distanced themselves with four runs in the top of the sixth ensure their fourth straight victory over Rider (8-15, 1-3).

The Saints quickly placed men on base and went to work, with Milone and freshman Ryan McGee each notching RBI singles that plated Brendan Conley and freshman Devan Kruzinski. Durfee then walked with the bases loaded to send in McGee and senior Matt Hamel smacked a Sacrifice fly to right that scored Kelly.

Miller (3-1) recorded his first complete game of the 2019 season and the eighth in his storied career, allowing just one earned run, walking three and bringing his career strikeout total to 228. The Castleton, NY native now sits in a tie for 14th place in MAAC history in the statistic and ranks first among active pitchers in the conference.

Following its second series-opening win of the year, Siena will conclude the weekend series at Rider with a single admission doubleheader on Saturday, March 230. First pitch is scheduled at Noon and 2:30 PM for each game, respectively.
