LOUDONVILLE, NY – In front of an electric crowd of 500 plus that packed the grandstands at Hickey Field Saturday afternoon, the Siena Saints squared off in what was a highly anticipated MAAC matchup that put the Green and Gold up against the Quinnipiac Bobcats. In the contest that did not disappoint for the fans on hand, the Saints could not hang onto a fourth quarter lead and fell 13-10 in the hard fought, physical battle.
Siena (5-3, 3-1) was led by a strong four-goal showing from sophomore
Jack Kiernan, scoring all four on 10 shots. The top point's getter was senior
Mike Reilly, who scored a pair of goals and tossed out five assists for five points on the afternoon. Senior
Keenan Cook also added three points, along with sophomore
Nick Pepe who totaled three as well with a goal and two assists. Graduate student
Aaron Lewis made 10 saves in the contest in just his second loss of the season.
Quinnipiac (6-3, 3-0) saw Foster Cuomo put up a seven-point game with five goals and two assists. Jake Tomsik also posted a six-point day for the Bobcats, scoring three goals and three assists for a six-point day. Four other Bobcats scored on the afternoon, as goalie Nick DiMuccio made 13 saves in the win.
It would be Siena to jump on top first almost four minutes into the first period, as Reilly sniped a goal to break the ice at the 11:09 mark. That led into goals from Cook, Pepe, and a man up goal from Kiernan to take control of the game. Through the first 15 minutes, the Saints would lead 4-2.
The Bobcats made a slight comeback in the second period, as a 5-2 lead by the Saints after a Cook goal to open the frame made such. Quinnipiac would then score a pair of goals to cut Siena's lead back to within one score. But at the 6:11 mark of the second, freshman
Seth Van Schepen stopped the run and kept Siena ahead as both sides traded tallies down the stretch. As the halftime horn hit, the Green and Gold held a 7-5 lead.
The third quarter would remain relatively quiet for either side, as the Saints outscored the Bobcats 2-1 before things headed off into the fourth. Siena would hold a 9-6 heading into the fourth quarter. That is where Quinnipac caught fire, as they were able to tie up the score by the 8:11 mark of the fourth at 9-9. The Saints kept pace as Kiernan scored with 5:49 remaining to put the Saints back up by one goal. But over the final 4:28 of the game, Quinnipiac went on a 4-0 run to tie and top the Green and Gold in regulation.
Siena racked up the most penalty minutes in any game so far this season. Both teams combined for a total count of 93 shots over the 60 minutes.
The Saints return to the field on Saturday, April 6 as they hit the road to Poughkeepsie, NY to take on the Marist Red Foxes. Game time for the matchup down I-87 is set for 7 p.m.
