Men’s Lacrosse Stung at Marist in Close Battle

Saints Late Comeback Attempt Falls Short in Loss

Despite a late push, capped with a 3-0 run near the end of regulation, the Siena Saints fell to the Marist Red Foxes on Saturday night by a final score of 13-11. The Green and Gold have now lost back-to-back games for the first time all season. Senior Mike Reilly put up a four-point performance, scoring twice with a pair of assists.

Siena (5-4, 3-2) was led by Reilly, with senior Keenan Cook scoring a team-high three times on seven shots. Eric Munn and Dylan Pantalone each scored twice as well, with Brendan Lantieri and Nick Pepe each scoring once. Graduate senior Aaron Lewis made 10 saves in new for the Saints in taking the loss.

Marist (5-5, 3-1) saw Jake Weinman score a team-high four points with three goals and an assist on the night. Vito Musso was the only other multi-goal scorer on the night, as Marist had eight other players with a single goal. Goalie Jake Macgregor made a game-high 12 saves on the night, grabbing the win.

The Saints were able to strike with three goals in a row in the opening frame after Marist struck first in the opening minutes. Cook scored the equalizer at the 12:43 mark, and Reilly would go back-to-back with tallies at the 8:07 mark and 4:52 mark to give the Green and Gold a 3-1 lead. However, the Red Foxes would get goals from Michael Smith and Jake Weinman to tie things at 3-3 heading into the second period.

The second period brought a flurry of scores from both sides, as they traded goals to begin the period. Munn hit an equalizer at the 10:22 mark to bring things to 4-4. Marist would pull out to a two-goal lead before the Saints scored a pair of their own within a minute to tie the game back up at 6-6. With the scores from Cook and Pantalone to make things even, Marist scored another two goals to jump ahead 8-6 with 3:24 to play in the half. But, a goal from Nick Pepe with 2:04 remaining cut the lead back to one entering the half.

The third period would belong to Marist, as they outscored the Saints 5-1 in the frame to take a 13-8 lead. The only goal in the third would come from Lantieri with 5:59 to play. In the fourth, the Saints would hold the Red Foxes scoreless, and go on a mini 3-0 run down the stretch to come within striking distance. But, a late push from the Saints would fall short as they fell 13-11.

Both sides totaled 23 shots on new each, and each team turned the ball over 16 times. Siena caused 11 turnovers, and were a solid 2-for-4 on the extra man opportunities. However, Marist won the ground game with 31 ground balls and winning 21-of-28 faceoffs.

The Saints return to the field this Tuesday, April 9 when they head to Princeton. The opening faceoff will kick things off at 6 p.m.
