Men’s Lacrosse Storms by St. John’s in Dominating Win

Saints Top Red Storm in First Home Win of Season

LOUDONVILLE, NY - Returning to Hickey Field after a pair of road games, the Siena Men's Lacrosse team was ready to break out for their first home win of the season. They did just that, as the Saints scored a season-high 18 goals in a commanding 18-10 victory over St. John's Saturday afternoon. The win would be their first win over a Big East member since they previously beat the Red Storm in their meeting on Feb. 28, 2015 in an 8-7 victory.

Siena (2-2) was led by a six-point day out of senior Keenan Cook, as he scored four goals and tallied a pair of assists on the day. Fellow senior Eric Munn quietly put together a monster day, scoring two goals and dishing a team-high three assists for a five-point day. Siena put together nine different scorers, and topped the Red Storm in all offensive categories. Most notably, the Saints outshot the Red Storm 53-35, and collected 41 ground balls to St. John's 26. The Saints also controlled the faceoff battled, winning 19 of 32 faceoffs in the game. Graduate student goalie Aaron Lewis would make nine saves between the pipes.

St. John's (2-3) was led by a trio of two-goal days from Declan Smartwood, Joe Madsen, and Colin Duffy. That would account for over half of the Red Storm points, as Smartwood added an assist for a three-point day. Mike Madsen also had three points with a goal and two assists. Luke Roediger led St. John's in ground balls with five. Goalie Brody Agres swiped four ground balls and made 15 saves in net.

The Saints jumped on the board first just over a minute into the first quarter, and never looked back. Munn started things off and set the tone with his fourth goal of the season, followed by scores from Mike Reilly and Maurice Tessier. That would give Siena an early 3-0 lead just five minutes in. By the end of the first, Siena had added another three goals courtesy of Cook, Jack Kiernan, and Brendan Lantieri for a 6-2 lead after the first 15.

Both teams would lock down on defense in the second quarter, with each side combining for three goals in the whole quarter. Siena would score two of the three, with Cook scoring both to give the Green and Gold an 8-3 lead at the half.

Siena kept their foot on the pedal in the third quarter, scoring another six goals in the frame that including four unanswered goals from the 9:54 mark until the 6:02 mark remaining in the third. Kiernan would tally another pair, while Reilly added another around a Nick Pepe score. However, St. John's scored a pair within 15 seconds in the final 25 seconds of the third to cut the Siena lead to 14-6 heading into the final quarter.

The deficit for St. John's proved to be too large, as Siena kept up the offensive pace. Despite getting within seven goals, that would be as close as the Red Storm would get. Cook collected his fourth goal to open the fourth, before the Red Storm scored a pair to make it 15-8 with 11:30 to go. Both sides traded goals the rest of the way, capped by a Kiernan score for Siena with 49 seconds remaining in the game to ice their second win.

Siena returns to action on Tuesday, March 12 when they return to Hickey Field to take on the St. Bonaventure Bonnies at 3 p.m. to open MAAC play.
