Manhattan swept both ends of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon in Wappingers Falls, New York to clinch the series from Siena Baseball. The Jaspers doubled up the Saints 8-4 in the series opener, and walked-off 2-1 in the seven-inning nightcap.
Game One: Manhattan 8, Siena 4
Manhattan (13-21, 6-2) scored seven unanswered runs in the middle innings to capture the opener.
Alex Milone registered three hits and
Craig Corliss added a pair of hits and scored twice to pace Siena (9-21, 4-7).
The Saints claimed a 2-0 lead through three-and-a-half innings following a heads-up baserunning play by
Zach Durfee in the second, and an infield single by
Tim Carroll in the fourth to score a run. Durfee took off for second on a hit-and-run groundout, and kept on running for third. He beat the throw to third, which was covered by the catcher, and then won the footrace home to cross the unoccupied plate.
Manhattan tallied a pair of unearned runs to draw even in the fourth, and then claimed the lead for good with a three-run fifth. Nick Cimillo highlighted the frame with the go-ahead two-run home run.
John Cain tossed seven strong innings scattering seven hits and two runs while walking three and striking out seven to earn the win for the Jaspers.
Game Two: Manhattan 2, Siena 1 (7)
Brendan Conley hit the game-tying home run with Siena down to its final two outs, but Manhattan recorded three of its six hits in the final frame punctuated by the game-winning one-out single by Sam Franco to walk off.
Brendan White for the Saints and T.J. Stuart for the Jaspers locked up in a pitcher's duel in the nightcap. White struck out nine in being saddled with the tough-luck loss, while Stuart struck out six while allowing just three hits to register the complete game win.
Dominic Palma opened the scoring with a sacrifice fly in the first for Manhattan, which stood up until the final inning. With Siena's backs against the wall, Conley deposited his third home run of the season over the left field wall to knot the score.
But the Jaspers pieced together three consecutive one-out singles capped by Franco's game-winner to score Jake Knop with the decisive run for Manhattan which won its seventh straight at Dutchess Stadium.
The Saints will look to salvage the series Sunday with the finale at noon.
