Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Saints Fall Just Short in Senior Day Loss to Fairfield

Horton Reaches Career Milestones in Slim Defeat

LOUDONVILLE, NY – With her start in net on Saturday afternoon, senior Sammy Horton became the all-time leader in games played for goalies in Siena women's lacrosse history. In a game that was tabbed as a fight for first place in the MAAC, Horton also made 15 saves to eclipse 600 for her career. However, the Stags would get a go-ahead goal with 2:16 to play to top the Saints 12-11.

Siena (9-6, 5-2) was led by Horton's defensive performance in net. Offensively, the Saints saw hat tricks from junior Annie Brennan and redshirt freshman Kaitlyn Dowsett. Freshman Mary Soures also ended up with three points, putting up a goal and assist. Kerry Gerety would score twice, while Julia Pelcher and Alexandra Rekos also scored a goal apiece.

Fairfield (11-3, 6-0) saw a pair of hat tricks as well, as Kathleen Hulseman and Kelly Horning each scored a trio of goals on the day. Hulseman added an assist for four points on the day. The Stags had five others score a goal apiece, with goalie Olivia Conquest snagging the win making 11 saves.

Things started fast offensively from both sides, as Siena scored a pair of goals within the first four minutes of play, as Gerety and Brennan each tallied for a 2-0 lead. The Stags answered back with a pair of their own, as the score stood 2-2 after the first 10 minutes of play. Each side traded barbs through to the halfway point, as neither team gained an advantage of more than a goal as the score ended up at 6-6 going into halftime. Brennan would score her second of the day with 2:28 before the halfway point to tie things up.

The Stags took advantage early in the second half, scoring a pair to open up the first two goal lead by any side within the first two minutes. Holding an 8-6 lead, the Stags would give up a goal to Dowsett at the 27:32 mark. That spurred another two goals from Fairfield, as they grabbed their biggest lead of the day at three goals with their score at the 19:02 mark. As the half wound down, Horton made some big saves as the Saints chipped away at the lead.

Siena would lead into a 4-0 run from the 17:44 mark through to the 6:52 mark as Dowsett, Brennan, Pelcher, and Gerety all scored to lead a comeback. That would give Siena an 11-10 lead with less than seven minutes remaining. However, the Stags would score at the 5:08 mark to tie it, and once more on a goal from Taylor Mitchell to take the lead at 12-11 with 2:16 to play. Siena was unable to convert any chances down the stretch, and were whistled for a turnover with 30 seconds to play.

Fairfield outshot the Saints 34-27, and held a strong advantage on the draw control 17-7. However, the Saints forced 16 turnovers from the Stags, including 13 in the first half.

The Saints will return to action next Wednesday, April 17 when they head south to Marist to take on the Red Foxes at 4 p.m. in their MAAC regular season finale.
