Coming into Saturday afternoon, the Monmouth Hawks sat at the top of the MAAC standings at 3-0 along with Fairfield. Siena, sitting just under that to start the day, shook things up at the top of the standings as they took down the Hawks by a final score of 13-11. With the win, the Saints win eight games for the first time since 2015, and tie a program record for third most wins in a season. The Saints also defeat the Hawks for the first time in program history since meeting for the first time in 1997.
Siena (8-5, 4-1) was led by a four-point day from sophomore
Kerry Gerety. She scored three goals with an assist, while sophomore
Nicole McNeely and freshman
Mary Soures also each scored a trio. Redshirt freshman
Kaitlyn Dowsett scored twice with an assist for three points, and
Julia Pelcher adding a score as well. Senior
Sammy Horton continued her strong senior campaign with a nine save effort in the win.
Monmouth (9-4, 3-1) had Rachel Mills score three goals to lead their offense on the day, while Allison Turturro and Jenny Staines each scored twice as well. Caroline Bleck added one score, with Riley Brager only making four saves on the contest in the loss.
The Saints scored twice in the opening few minutes courtesy of Gerety to open a quick 2-0 lead early. Monmouth would tie things up from there at the 17:33 mark as they scored two in a row. Both sides traded barbs until the Saints scored two in a row at the 8:55 mark and 6:18 mark as McNeely and Soures each tallied to give Siena a 5-3 lead. But the Hawks would score three in a row over the rest of the half, with the go-ahead goal with 11 seconds remaining in the first half to take a 6-5 lead after the first 30 minutes.
The slew of scoring did not slow down in the second, as Siena did not waste any time evening things up again, with Soures scoring 1:24 into the second half to tie things at 6-6. The Saints would proceed to score another two goals just minutes later to go back up by two goals, with Dowsett and Soures getting back into the action. With an 8-6 lead, the Saints would see Monmouth come back once again and tie things at 8-8 with 18:23 remaining. Each team would trade goals twice more, as things stood 10-10 with 11:29 to play as Caroline Bleck scored off the free position for the Hawks.
Then with 4:45 to play, Dowsett would break the tie with her second goal of the game to go up 11-10. McNeely would follow that up with 2:45 to play, as Siena created some cushion for the final minutes. It would come in handy, as Monmouth scored with 37 seconds remaining, coming back within one, 12-11. However, a key draw control from
Megan Power gave Siena possession, which they would keep and score with one second remaining to seal the deal for the 13-11 win.
The Hawks outshot the Saints overall in the game 29-26, with a 20-17 advantage on shots on net. But, the Saints won 15 draw controls, which would be key down the stretch as Gerety won 10 herself.
The Saints return to the field on Wednesday, April 10 when they travel to east to Quinnipiac. The opening draw between Siena and the Bobcats will go up at 3 p.m.
