UMass Lowell scored single runs in four of the first five innings to defeat Siena Baseball 4-2 in Massachusetts.
Matt Hamel went a perfect 3-3 at the plate and homered for the Saints in the team's non-conference finale.
UMass Lowell (17-33) scratched together a 3-0 lead through the first four innings of play. Siena (17-31) responded with a pair of runs in the fifth on a leadoff home run by Hamel and an RBI groundout by
Ryan McGee.
But the Riverhawks added an insurance run in the home half of the fifth to provide the final margin and secure their fifth straight win overall. Joey Castellanos and Kyle Maurice tallied three hits apiece for UMass Lowell which registered 12 overall but stranded 13 runners.
Brian Kelly added a pair of singles to compliment Hamel's effort, while
Brendan Conley and
Devan Kruzinski also recorded hits. Freshmen
Evan St. Claire and
Arlo Marynczak each worked scoreless innings on the mound as part of a staff day.
The Saints will now gear up for the squad's most important weekend of the season as they look to secure a MAAC Tournament berth. Siena enters their final series tied with Monmouth for the sixth and final MAAC Tournament spot. The Saints travel to MAAC rival Marist, whom sits two games ahead of Siena in the league standings, for a decisive three-game series which commences with a single game Friday at 3:30 p.m. in Poughkeepsie.
