Baseball Splits Regular Season Finale at Marist

Pair of Barnburners Wrap Season for Saints

It would be a day of records and runs, as the Siena Saints split their regular season wrapping doubleheader at Marist, losing game one 14-10 and coming back to win game two 14-11. Senior Brian Kelly became the 16th player in program history to collect 200 career hits, while Brendan White also set the program's single-season record in strikeouts, finishing with 93. Both teams combined for a total 49 runs on the day. The Saints will wrap their season with an overall record of 18-33, with a 12-12 mark in the MAAC.

Game One: Marist 14, Siena 10
A seven-run fourth inning helped lead the Marist Red Foxes to a game one victory Saturday afternoon. Ryan McGee smacked three hits, including a triple for the Saints while Marist's Frankie Gregoire hit two home runs for three hits and seven RBI.

The Saints began the scoring with a run in each of the first two innings for an early 2-0 lead. However, Marist would tie the game at 2-2 as things headed to the fourth. There, things got even more crazy with 11 total runs scored. Siena would start the frame with four runs, as McGee and Durfee smacked back-to-back RBI triples. That would be followed with a seven run inning by Marist. With the score 9-6, the Red Fixes added another three runs in the fifth to hold a 12-6 lead going into the sixth.

Despite a four-run sixth by the Saints to come back within striking distance at 12-10, Marist added another pair of runs in the bottom of the inning to take the 14-10 lead into the seventh. Alex Pansini would get the Saints 1-2-3 in the top of the seventh to wrap the ballgame.

Game Two: Siena 14, Marist 11
The back end of the doubleheader brought even more offense to around the bases as the Saints topped the Red Foxes with a big four-run ninth inning.

Senior Brian Kelly would be the hero in the game, plating the go-ahead runs in the ninth with his team-leading third hit of the ballgame. Kelly also collected a double, four RBI and three runs scored in the process, en route to becoming the 16th player in program history to eclipse 200 hits for their career. Ryan McGee, Zach Durfee, Alex Milone, Matt Hamel, and Devin Kruzinski all collected multi-hit games as well, with Hamel snagging three RBI. John Nolan collected the win out of the bullpen, tossing 1.1 innings of relief, allowing only one hit.

With the first game of the day becoming a race to the finish, game two quickly became the same as the Saints grabbed a 4-2 lead after two innings. They would score three in the first inning, as McGee, Durfee, and Kelly all collected hits to start the game setting up the big inning.

However, Marist would score in five of the first six innings, while the Saints scored in bunches. The score would stand 10-8 in favor of the Red Foxes as we approached the final third of the ballgame. The Saints broke through and tied the game in the eighth inning, as Durfee and Kelly each got hits to reach. Hamel would ground out to score Durfee, while Kelly scored on a throwing error by the pitcher to even things up.

The Green and Gold would take advantage of a huge bottom of the eighth, as Nolan came out of the bullpen and stranded the bases loaded full of Red Foxes as the game went to the ninth. The momentum carried over, as Siena drew the bases loaded on three straight walks, allowing Kelly to bring home a pair on an RBI single. Milone and Hamel each singles in the successive at-bats, scoring the other two runs for a 14-10 lead. Nolan came back out for the ninth, and finished off the game for the win.
