ALBANY, NY – Jalen Pickett scored a game-high 25 points including 14 consecutive midway through a dominant second half as Siena Basketball slammed MAAC co-leader Quinnipiac 84-61 in front of another season-high crowd of 6,752 at the Times Union Center.
Elijah Burns added his second double-double of the season with 19 points and 13 rebounds for the Saints who matched the program's longest home court win streak in a decade, while also achieving their largest margin of victory in five years.
Pickett shot 9-13 from the field, 4-6 from distance, and posted his second straight game with eight assists and just one turnover for Siena (9-9, 5-4) who improved to a perfect 9-0 at home to match the longest home court win streak since winning a program record 38 straight at the Times Union Center from 2008-10. Pickett, who has now scored 71 points in two career games vs. Quinnipiac (10-8, 5-3), notched 18 of his points in the second half for the Saints whose 23-point win tied for the program's largest margin of victory since an 89-54 triumph over Manhattan on Dec. 4, 2015 here in Albany.
Burns registered his fifth game this season with exactly 19 points, while shooting 7-8 shooting for Siena who shot a season-high 58% from the field against the MAAC's best field goal percentage defense entering the day (.401).
Manny Camper added 19 points and eight rebounds for the Saints who held a 34-25 advantage on the glass to snap a four-game losing streak against the Bobcats.
The MAAC's leading scorer entering play Rich Kelly (17.6) was limited to a quiet 12 points on 5-14 shooting for Quinnipiac who shot just 7-23 (30%) from three after entering the game ranked seventh nationally averaging 10.4 threes per contest. The nation's leading rebounder Kevin Marfo contributed his 10
th double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds for the Bobcats, although he pulled down just two caroms during a quiet second half.
Siena trailed for just 23 seconds early in the second half and led by as many as 25 in arguably their most dominant effort of the season. The Saints came out gangbusters, opening the game on a 13-2 flurry over the first four minutes. Siena still led by as many as 11 midway through the first half but Quinnipiac, who shot 52% in the half, chipped away at the deficit to pull within 40-37 at the break.
The Bobcats ultimately rallied to take their first and only lead at 43-42 just a minute-and-a-half into the second half, but Siena responded with a 14-2 run to reclaim a double-digit advantage at 56-45 on a Pickett three with 12:51 to play. Quinnipiac never got any closer than nine thereafter, and the Saints rattled off a late 13-2 run to push the lead to 20 and pull away. Siena dished out 19 assists in the victory, the program's most since recording 22 vs. Hofstra on Nov. 25, 2017 here at the Times Union Center.
Jacob Rigoni and Matt Balanc scored 10 points apiece for the Bobcats who shot just 32% in the second half including only 3-11 from distance.
Siena will look to build off its momentum as it heads back out of town in search of its elusive first road win. The Saints return to action Friday night when they battle four-time defending MAAC Tournament Champion Iona at 7 p.m. in New Rochelle.
