It was a night of atmosphere in the Alumni Recreation Center Thursday night, as Siena hosted their 20th annual Pink Zone game. As the Saints in partner with ToLife! attempted to break their mark of $200,000 lifetime funds raised over the last 20 years, on the hardwood the Saints would fall to the Rider Broncs by a final score of 69-38. The loss would snap a five-game winning streak for the Green and Gold.
Â
The Saints were led by a 13 point night from senior
Sabrina Piper, as she also snagged three rebounds and a pair of assists which would be the only ones for the Saints on the night. Sophomore Lala Watts added eight points and nine rebounds as she just fell short of a double-double. Junior
Marilena Gerostergiou also added nine rebounds as well.
Â
Sophomore Lala Watts has now entered the Top 10 list for blocked shots in a single season. With a block on Thursday evening, she now has sole possession of fifth on the list with 47 blocks on the season. With one more, she will tie Katy Sturgis' 1981-82 season total of 48, and with two more will tie Gunta Basko for third on the list as she put up 49 blocks in 2001-02. Also within reach is Serena Moore's total of 51 blocks in a season back in 2010-11, which ranks as the second most total in a season by a Siena Saint in program history.
Â
In addition, Watts ranks first in the MAAC in blocked shots, currently averaging 2.1 blocks per game. She is the only play in the MAAC averaging over two blocks per game, as Rider's Amari Johnson ranks second with 36 total blocks and a 1.6 blocks per game average. Watts' 47 blocked shots rank 29th in the NCAA, while her 2.1 blocks per game ranks 32nd in the country. Also of note for lists, senior
Sabrina Piper needs just 74 points to reach the 1,000 point benchmark for her career.
Â
In the series history, Siena and Rider will be squaring off for the 71st time on Sunday afternoon, with the Red Foxes holding a 38-32 advantage all-time. Head Coach
Ali Jaques stands eight wins away from passing Joe Hogan on Siena's all-time coaching wins list.
Â
The last time these two teams met was back on Feb. 1, 2019, with the Red Foxes defeating the Saints in the ARC by a final score of 73-58. In that game, the Saints were led by stellar offensive performance from redshirt senior
Aaliyah Jones, as she set a career-high in points with a 27 point night on 10-for-19 shooting from the field, including a 7-for-11 clip from behind the three-point line. She is the most recent Saint to hit seven three's in a game since Jackie Benitez hit seven against Syracuse in 2016. Jones also added four steals to her stat line, while
Sabrina Piper knocked down 14 points and three assists.
