ALBANY, NY – Siena Basketball held Manhattan scoreless for 7:24 down the stretch to fuel a game-ending 14-2 run in a 65-52 victory in front of a capacity crowd of 7,146 at the Times Union Center.
Manny Camper posted his 11
th double-double of the season with 16 points and 13 rebounds for the Saints who've won six of seven overall and improved to 12-0 at home.
Jalen Pickett scored 10 points and dished out eight assists for Siena (13-10, 9-5) who emerged victorious in the program's 600
th all-time MAAC game to take over sole possession of second place in the conference standings. Reserve Sammy Friday provided a lift off the bench with a season-high tying 10 points for the Saints who remain just a half-game back of league-leading Saint Peter's.
Pauly Paulicap scored 10 of his 12 points in the second half for Manhattan (11-12, 7-7) who has dropped five of its last six on the road. Elijah Buchanan added 11 points and Tykei Greene contributed 10 points and eight rebounds.
Siena shot an efficient 49% from the field and committed fewer than 10 turnovers for the second straight game to secure the program's 15
th win in their past 17 matchups against the Jaspers at the Times Union Center. The Saints did the vast majority of their offensive damage on the interior, where they scored a season-high 46 of their 65 points in the paint.
Siena scored eight straight points midway through the first half to open as much as a 10-point advantage at 23-13 at the 8:37 mark. The Saints shot an even 50% and turned Manhattan over 10 times in the opening half to take a 35-30 lead at the break.
Siena built as much as an 11-point lead in the opening minutes of the second half, but the pesky Jaspers stuck around. Manhattan responded with a 14-4 run to narrow the gap to just a single point at 51-50 on a Paulicap layup with 9:30 remaining.
But the Saints, who've trailed for a total of just 23 seconds over their past five home games, dug in their heels and wouldn't relinquish the lead. Siena forced the Jaspers to misfire on their next nine field goal attempts, and methodically put together a decisive 10 unanswered points to go back up by double figures on a Pickett jumper with 2:27 left.
Elijah Burns and
Donald Carey chipped in nine points apiece for the Saints who've won their past five home games by an average margin of 14.8 points.
Siena wraps up its season long four-game homestand with its penultimate home game of the regular season when they look to complete the sweep of four-time defending MAAC Tournament Champion Iona Wednesday at 7 p.m.
