Siena senior lacrosse player Megan Power was looking for a way to fill plenty of unexpected free time at her parents' house in Cranford, N.J.
The season had just been canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic. Siena extended its spring break and then went to online courses, like other colleges.
"I actually just got home from school, with all that was going on, and I was looking for a new hobby to take up,'' Power said by phone Wednesday. "My mom suggested maybe I take her old sewing machine and teach myself how to sew.'
Power, who plans to become a nurse practitioner, then found a constructive way to practice her new skill. She and her younger sister, Grace, are sewing masks in their family's kitchen to donate to New Jersey hospitals during the health emergency.
