Head Coach
Jim Jabir faces off against the Bonnies for the 18
th time in his career as a head coach, holding a 12-5 overall record against them. However, Jabir's first career victory as a head coach at Siena came on Nov. 28, 1987 against St. Bonaventure by a final score of 71-57.
The Siena Saints would begin their 2021-22 campaign with a heart breaker as the Green and Gold would fall to the Binghamton Bearcats by a final score of 59-55 on the road Tuesday evening. The Saints received a 16-point game from fifth year
Rayshel Brown, who scored eight of her 16 points from the free throw line. Brown also added three steals, as did senior
Margo Peterson. Peterson would fall one point and one rebound from a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds. Senior
Amari Anthony also finished in double figures with 12 points and eight rebounds. The Saints would shoot 27.5 percent from the field, including a 7.7 percent mark in the fourth quarter.
Siena enters its 48th season as a program, 40th as a Division I program, and 33rd in the MAAC. The Saints look to build off a 4-9 record a year ago, as the Saints enter
Jim Jabir era 2.0. The Green and Gold will be led with veterans such as Preseason All-MAAC Third Team selection
Rayshel Brown,
Amari Anthony,
Tobulayefa Watts, and
Margo Peterson while also mixing in many newcomers. Jabir takes over after spending four seasons at Florida Atlantic. The Saints return four of their top five scorers, with Brown leading that pack. Young and
Marilena Gerostergiou are the only two graduates from last season's squad, as Brown, Anthony, Watts, and Peterson all averaged over 25.0 minutes per game.
The Bonnies return seven players from the 2020-21 roster, including Atlantic 10 All-Conference guard Asianae Johnson. The senior from Brooklyn led the Bonnies in scoring a season ago, averaging 13.5 points per contest. Johnson enters her senior season needing just 45 points to eclipse the 1,000-point mark for her career, currently ranking 25th on the Bonnies all-time scoring list with 955 points. She has started all 81 games through three seasons with the Bonnies. She was selected to the Atlantic 10 Preseason All-Conference Third Team last month.
In the series history, Siena and St. Bonaventure will be squaring off for the 23rd time on Thursday. The Saints currently hold a 13-9 advantage despite the Bonnies winning the last three of four matchups. The last Siena win in the series came in the 2017-18 season when the Saints defeated the Bonnies 70-62 at the UHY Center.
