Saints Hang Tough in Road Loss at Detroit Mercy

Men’s Lacrosse Surrenders Late Goals in Defeat Against Titans

LOUDONVILLE, NY – The Siena Men's Lacrosse team faced another heartbreaker on Saturday afternoon, as the Green and Gold fell on the road at Detroit Mercy by a final score of 11-9. The Saints have now lost each of their four games this season by two goals or less.

Putting up the stellar day for Siena was senior Jack Kiernan, who finished with seven total points on three goals and four total assists. Colin Gleason added a goal and assist apiece for the Saints, while six others chipped in with a point.

Detroit Mercy was led by a three point effort from Will Edell, who tossed out a trio of assists. Four other Titans finished with at least two points, as Ryan Birney, Kyle Loken, and Brett Erskine each scored twice.

The first quarter saw limited scoring, as the Titans got their first strike just a little more than four minutes into the game. The score would sit 1-0 throughout the first until Kiernan struck for Siena with just 34 seconds remaining in the first to pull even at 1-1.

That opened up the floodgates, as both sides fought with two goals apiece through the first six minutes of the second quarter. It would ultimately be the Saints who got the two goal edge with a pair of late scores from Pantalone and Kiernan to give Siena the 5-3 lead going into the half.

The flurry continued into the second half, as the Saints were able to build a lead as large as three when George Rusnak scored on a dish from Kiernan to give Siena a 7-4 with 10:07 to play in the third. That led to four unanswered goals for Detroit Mercy as the Titans would take an 8-7 lead into the fourth quarter after getting the go-ahead goal from Erskine with 50 seconds left in the third.

Both sides battled to begin the fourth, as Gleason tied it for Siena at 9-9 with 5:05 to play. That would be the final score for Siena on the day, as the Titans responded two minutes later with a go-ahead goal at the 3:02 mark, and some cushion with a goal with 1:06 to play.

The Saints return to action next Saturday, Apr. 3 when they host Marist at Hickey Field at 12 PM.
