Women’s Lacrosse Begins 2021 Season Against Canisius (WATCH)

Saints Will Begin With Two Matchups Opposite Golden Griffins Saturday and Sunday

LOUDONVILLE, NY – The Siena women's lacrosse program and fourth year head coach Abigail Rehfuss look to sustain the program's recent success in pursuit of another appearance in the MAAC Championship game as their 2021 campaign kicks off on Saturday at 11 AM. The Saints will take on the Canisius Golden Griffins on back-to-back days, also facing them on Sunday at 12 PM.

Siena returns plenty of firepower in graduate student Annie Brennan, senior Kerry Gerety and senior Nicole McNeely. All three earned All-MAAC honors the last two years, while senior Emily Pomeroy will anchor the defense. Redshirt junior Kaitlyn Dowsett will also play a major role up front on attack with McNeely. Gerety is on track to break multiple Siena Saints records this season, most notably the career assists (12 away) and draw control (12 away) records.

In this year's MAAC Preseason Coaches' Poll, taking the top spot in the poll with 76 points and five first place votes was the Monmouth Hawks. Fairfield would take second with 69 points and two first place votes. The Saints would bring home the third spot with 68 points and one first place vote, finishing just behind the Stags. Marist would follow the Saints in fourth with 57 points and one first place vote. Niagara pulled in 33 points in fifth, followed by Manhattan in sixth with 29 points. Rounding out the poll seven through nine were Canisius (28), Quinnipiac (27), and Iona (18).

In addition to Gerety's assist and draw control records, plenty of other Saints are within reach of other milestones this season. Despite last season's shortened season, the trio of Gerety (currently 7th), McNeely (15 points away), and Brennan (eight points away) are on track to break into the career Top 10 list for points. Individually, Brennan will crack the career Top 10 list in goals with just five scores this season.

The Saints are 1-2 in home openers under Rehfuss, and are 11-13 all-time in home openers. In season openers all-time, the Saints are 4-20 overall, with the last season opening win coming in 2016 with a season-opening win at Mercer. Siena is currently 8-16 all-time against Canisius, with this weekend's games being the 25th and 26th meeting all-time. They are the third most freqent opponent in program history next to Fairfield (26) and Manhattan (24).

After this opening weekend, the Saints will head to Manhattan next Sunday, Mar. 14 to take on the Manhattan Jaspers in further MAAC action. Game time in Riverdale is set for 12 PM.
