The Siena Women's Lacrosse program has waited almost two years for a rematch with the Fairfield Stags after falling in overtime in the 2019 MAAC Championship game. The Saints avenged that loss in a big way on Saturday, as
Mary Soures scored seven goals en route to a 15-11 victory.
There have been four seven-goal games in the MAAC this season, with three of them belonging to the Saints. Soures' notched her second of the season having done it in the season's opening weekend, while
Kaitlyn Dowsett accomplished the feat last weekend against Quinnipiac.
To go with Soures' seven points, Dowsett added four points with three goals and an assist.
Kerry Gerety,
Laura Bonomo, and
Annie Brennan each chipped in with a pair of points while
Hayley Kmack provided a goal on her stat line.
Ally Mervine would make nine saves in net for her fifth win of the season. With the win, Mervine moves into the top five all-time in program history in career wins with eight, pulling into a tie with Mary-Elizabeth Dupelle. Junior
Hannah Field led the defensive effort in front of the cage with a trio of caused turnovers.
Fairfield was led by a three-point day off the bench from Elizabeth Rowe, as she scored three goals on four shots and netted three ground balls. Kelly Horning, Meaghan Graham, and Diana DeVita each collected two points apiece while five other Stags scored just one goal on the afternoon. Horning also chipped in with three caused turnovers.
Both sides went goal for goal over the first six goals of the game as both sides were knotted at 3-3 thanks to a pair of scores from Bonomo and Soures' first of the day. With 12:35 to play in the first, Kmack would score to take a 4-3 lead, which propelled the Saints to a few extra scores to gain some cushion.
Soures would score her second while Dowsett got on the board for the Saints biggest lead of the day at 7-3. From there, Fairfield proceeded to make a goalie change as the Stags would hold Siena to just one more goal in the half and score five goals over the final 5:43 of the half to make it an 8-all game at the halfway point.
In the second half, Soures would get the scoring going with two goals 38 seconds apart to lift the Saints back to a two-goal lead. Siena's defense would buckle down, allowing just one even goal and two woman-up goals throughout the whole half as Brennan and Dowsett would each score twice along with Soures' seventh and final goal to shut the door on the Stags. Dowsett would deliver the knockout blow with 2:47 to play to give Siena the 15-11 lead for their second four-goal lead on the afternoon.
The Saints return to action on Friday, Apr. 16 when they play host to the Marist Red Foxes in the first of a two-game weekend set at Hickey Field. Game one of the series is set for a 3 p.m. opening draw.
